I have to disagree. It’s not a running gag, it’s characterization. End his crush on Rarity and we’re left with a diminished Spike. He’s a child… his crush is cute and harmless. He’s okay with Rarity showing interest in stallions (he stands there smiling when she’s gushing about Trenderheart) and he doesn’t exactly lose sleep over her. It’s heartwarming to see that she gave him the plushie, and the crush has given us wonderful moments like the Fire Ruby. The crush can only be ended without tears (because children’s show) which would feel anti-climatic or made to disappear altogether which would feel lazy and cheap. Leave it be, I say… it could always become something far worse.

The might do it or not be his crush is part of his character if they wanted to pair him with anybody else they would have did by now.Plus I notice that alot of fans still love this ship.
 
Also it not sad,it may had funny moments but also had really sweet and heartwarming moments too.

Agreed, this has been going on for long enough for the little guy. Rarity either needs to reciprocate or break his heart.
