Using the toddler foals would bug me since they were the same age as Sweetie in “For Whom the Sweetie Belle Tolls”, I know they appeared the same age as they were in the flashback in the present, but putting them next to Sweetie Belle would just make it extra distracting.

No, she isn’t. These fillies have been in class with her, and look to be the same age. Also, a number of those fillies have had cutie marks in other episodes.

But they all be in most of the previous CMC episodes. So unless they’re all on some ageless spell it still looks really off.

It would have made much better sense if it were the toddler fillies we started seeing since For Whom The Sweetie Belle Tolls.

Not sure how it undermines the theme. Sweetie Belle is clearly older than the other fillies here; for one thing she’s the only one with a cutie mark.

Normal is overrated

This of one of the problems I have with the episode. As much as I love seeing the background fillies, it butches the theme that Sweetie Belle is growing up. It might have worked if Sweetie was wiser beyond her years or something like Lisa Simpson.
