I think it’s less that she wanted to be worshipped and more that she was sick of living in celestia’s shadow. The younger sibling, the other princess.
She most likely felt underappreciated and underachieving. In this timeline she has already won over a thousand years ago, she may have become more benevolent in that time.

Maybe she eventually tired of it, and found that celebrity is overrated? Many real life celebrities tired of the fame and adoration, so I don’t see why NMM eventually burned out on it.
