OK back. Dope apparently changes meaning all the time, ranging from a type a gravy (1800s), poison (1860s) opium (1880s), syrup (1900s), a sort of cola (1910s), a mixture of drugs heated into a syrup-like substance (derived from the earlier “syrup” meaning), another word for “medicine”, and finally marijuana (1950s). But yes, it has shifted to mean heroin (and sometimes any other opiate) in recent years.
