Ah yes, the common notion that people in first-world countries aren’t allowed to complain about ANYTHING due to the presence of greater problems in other parts of the world. In that case, perhaps OP shouldn’t be posting this picture to complain.
After all, there are puppies being kicked somewhere in the world right now; why are you complaining about other complainers, you selfish bastard?

@Chilly

I think what’s important is acknowledging your ancestry.

Oh, what the shitty shit?! That much for fast food? Yeah, I’m definitely postponing.

It’s very, very expensive. I’ve been there for a few days. The cheapest place to eat was McDonalds, and for 4 regular meals (burger, fries, drink) we paid over $95.
You’ve been warned.

@Trot: Maybe the reason I could see myself supporting rebels, if at least if I had been born in another time, has to do with my ancestry? Irish, French, and Dutch or so I’ve been told.

No. My dad’s a cheapskate and my mom doesn’t like to go to places because of medical reasons.

When I get my own place and get a decent paying job, then I more than likely will.

Okay. By quiet, I thought you meant peaceful or something.

Going to Sweden seems nice to me. Slovakia less so, but that’s more political than anything really.

Well thankfully your family’s been settled here for quiet some time. My parents are the first to leave Syria, so our connections there are very strong. I was born here and consider myself American, but Syria always felt like “home” to me. I’m trying to get rid of that notion because I can never go back (I’ll get killed if I do).

Yeah, well, fuck ya’ll, now you all know how Dresdeners felt. Welcome to 70 years ago, you extreme slowpokes.
Now fix my fucking pony or we’ll send in the sturmmorsers, and I’ll aim the artillery from my Skoda.

That’s understandable then.

I doubt my family would do the same since the last immigrant part of my family dame to the US in the early 20th century, so I doubt any connections between us and ethnic Slovaks/Swedes would be worth much. Not that I really have that many family members who aren’t dead or complete dumbasses.

@Trotsky:

We aren’t that well off either, but this is important to us.

I’m Syrian. Nearly my entire family resides/resided in Syria. Some are now dead, others went missing. A few lucky ones have fled (but I’ve lost all contact with them), the ones that I know are still alive don’t know if they will be alive for long.

The feeling of powerlessness is exhaustingly depressing. We do everything in our power to help, but even that is not nearly enough.

@Trotsky:

Well Wars in general make me uncomfortable, really doesn’t matter what kind, but I agree civil wars are (arguably) the worst kinds of wars.

And I hear ya on the medical aid, the good news is that there are various charities organized in support of civilians who literally have nothing (my family alone has donated tens of thousands of dollars in aid, and there are many others doing the same).

Fund raising is relatively simple, the hard part is getting the supplies to the civilians. As you could imagine it’s incredibly difficult and risky to sneak supplies in.

OK, as long as we’re on the same track.

And yes, there’s rarely anything empathetic with Bashar. At least Gaddafi and Mubarak had some good qualities.

Civil wars are just something that makes me uncomfortable. They’re just awful morally and biologically, and this is no different.

I’m all for giving, you know, medical aid for the rebels, just not weapons or men.
Goldenpwny

@Trotsky:

I get that, and you’re right, it doesn’t. The Free Syrian Army (the “rebels”) denounce those actions of the rebels that act in such a way, they try to fight ethically and abiding by international laws.
Bashar’s forces, on the other hand, make no such effort. On the contrary, civilians are specifically targeted and eradicated by any means necessary (even at the funerals where innocent civilian parents bury their dead children).

When you weigh them together, the war crimes committed by Bashar grossly out-weight the war crimes committed by the rebel forces. One side is fighting on behalf of unarmed oppressed citizens, the other is fighting to keep a brutal dictator in power. It’s that simple.
