Description

Name: Tarborex (combining the names ‘Tarbosaurus’ and ‘rex’)

Height: 10 feet tall at the shoulder

Length: 30 feet long

Weight: 3 tons

Age: 21 years old

Gender: Male

Sexual Orientation: Straight

Backstory: Tarborex is a dragon from a more tropical part of the world of My Little Pony, though his grandfather was a northern Equestrian dragon. At a certain point in his life (when he reached the juvenile stage of his life), he was able to convince his grandfather to let him tag along in the great dragon migration. Deciding that the forests and more diverse climate of Equestria was more to his liking, Tarborex established a new home in the Everfree forest.

As a different subspecies of dragon than the more common Equestrian dragons, Tarborex’s species has some unique attributes. They too can breathe fire and are immune to lava, due to dwelling on jungle-covered volcanic islands. However, they are not as obsessed with gemstones and other treasures as other dragon species, due to these being a rarity in his homeland. Instead, Tarborex’s kind is more interested in natural resources, such as the size of a given territory and variety of available prey.

Many of Tarborex’s kind will often take up a deity-like role for mildly intelligent species of whatever island they’re living on. Typically, these dragons will demand food and artsy treasures such as statues, carpets, and the like. These dragons are more lazy and tyrannical than the more solitary northern dragons.

They’re also venomous, capable of spitting a burning, somewhat acidic liquid when young, which when old can be replaced or mixed with volcanic magma, which they are able to eat and store in their poison pouches, and spit at enemies in a similar fashion.
But the tradeoff is that they take way longer to grow to a big size, as well as having the goldfish effect where if their environment can’t support them then they won’t grow at all.

This is why Tarborex is at the size he is now (roughly comparable in size to an Allosaurus fragilis), due to having to focus on living in the Everfree forest; he has to stay small in order to navigate the tight spaces between the trees with ease.

But for others of his kind, this adds another quirk to these tropical dragons should they grow large enough, which is the ability to create new islands by swimming to the bottom of the ocean and creating volcanoes by digging through the seafloor, and maintaining the lava flow until an island is formed.

Dragons capable of such a feat are recognizable both by their large size, and their darkly colored and tougher looking scales, as with these dragons lifestyles, their scales darken with age from their bright, more tropical jungle lizard looking colors, to a color more like cooled lava and a texture more like the Galapagos island marine iguanas.

But the younger and smaller ones are still pretty adept at manipulating lava, doing things like digging channels, transporting mouthfuls of lava, and sculpting the lava for their needs as it cools.

Hence their large heads, throat pouch, and bulky front legs for digging.

Currently, Tarborex lives pretty deep in the Everfree forest, residing near a decently-sized volcano and inadvertently keeping it active with his common burrowing through it.

Personality: Usually, Tarborex is a gentle giant; he does not usually attack unless provoked in any way or if he’s hungry. He’s a bit reclusive, shying away from any kind of civilization and keeping to himself. Make no mistake, though; Tarborex can be incredibly aggressive if enraged, attacking with relentless determination and having no qualms with killing his foes. If you manage in becoming friends with Tarborex, though, he will prove to be a valuable ally, more than gladly risking his own life if it means saving your’s.

Powers/Abilities:

Strength: Like other dragons of his kind, Tarborex possesses monstrous strength, capable of digging through bedrock with ease and burrowing through a volcano. His jaws are incredibly strong as well, much stronger than the bite of a Tyrannosaurus and able to bite through solid gems and stone with ease.

Thick Scales: Tarborex’s thick scales are incredibly durable; he could take a close range shot from a military tank and suffer no serious injury. He is essentially immune to blunt force trauma, and piercing attacks have a hard time penetrating his scales.

Fireproof: As with Equestrian dragons, Tarborex is fireproof; not even lava can faze him.

Fire Breath: Tarborex’s flames are bright blue in color and can generate heat greater than lava. He is able to discharge a thick stream of flames from his mouth.

Venom/Magma Stream: From his mouth, Tarborex can shoot a burning hot spray of glowing blue venom mixed with molten magma at his opponents. This concoction burns through steel and stone with utter ease, and can prove hotter than lava. The venomous effects also include numbness and dangerously low blood pressure.

Resistance: While not immune, Tarborex does have a notable resistance to magic; he cannot be changed or affected in any way by magic (such as mind controlling him or turning him into something else), and it requires stronger energy beams composed of magic to actually do any damage to him, though he can still be affected by telekinesis. He is also immune to the cockatrice’s stare, and most poisons and diseases can’t affect him.

Flight: Can fly at high speeds, comparable to many pegasus ponies, though he’s certainly not as fast as Rainbow Dash, nor as maneuverable.

I can’t take any of the credit for this guy’s design and his backstory; it’s all thanks to this artist here:

She helped conceive who I think is a well-done character, and she deserves the credit for this guy’s design and his backstory (only slightly altered by me). I’m quite glad I have this dragon OC. c:
