I think the keyword here is “some”. No matter what path a movie crew takes, they can never satisfy every single viewer. The best they can achieve is to make as many people possible content with what they’ve created. Right now, it seems the vast majority of fans enjoy and welcome this new art style. Admittedly, it does deviate a bit from the design in the show, but at the end of the day, these minor alterations are ultimately cosmetic. It’s the way our beloved heroines act and behave that will really determine how true they’ve remained to their characters and themselves.
I didn’t say I was turned off from the movie. I just don’t like it when companies decide to mess with long-established character designs. This happens is all mediums. Movies, TV shows, games. And it tends to happen often when something goes from a show to a movie. And it’s not always a good thing. I’ll give you an example.
When Star Trek: TNG hit the big screen, they decided instead of the Enterprise being bright and evenly-lit that most of the rooms should be much darker and rely on ambient light from the windows. The end result was something that looked markedly different from the ship we saw for seven years in the show. Some people didn’t like it. Myself included.
Now we’ve got the movie coming up, and twice now I’ve made a comment about not liking the redesigns, and had someone jump on me to tell me that nothing is different (which is absurb) and/or how the final product will be different because these images are just “errors” or whatever.
It smacks heavily of the Alicorn Twilight debate, with people swearing up and down that her wings were an “error” as well. And it appears some people don’t learn from history.
THAT is what the argument is actually over.
I’ve only ever come across one or two other people who are turned off by the movie solely because of the artistic design (which, at this point, we haven’t even seen in animation). Also, is a single hair highlight really worth starting an entire argument over just to begin with? I think that’s what Blissey1 is trying to get at.
Yes, I have commented on the same subject once before. The “derailment” was due to the same cause: Someone jumping on me and insisting that 1. Nothing was different. And 2. How the image wasn’t real or an error.
People buried their heads in the sand when the first Alicorn Twilight leaked pics happened. Seems like some people are going to do the same with her redesign.

No, it’s actually writing paragraphs of text about hair highlights of all things that makes it looks like your panicking. And if I recall correctly, this isn’t the first time you’ve completely derailed an image talking about twilight’s hair stripes, either.
I’ve seen people get into arguments over the most minor things before, but hair highlights has to be near the top of the list.

Maybe to the younger generations expressing a negative opinion and explaining the reasoning behind it is “panicking”, kind of like how disagreeing at all is “trolling” to idiots today.
Repeatedly insisting it doesn’t make you right. It just makes you look like jackasses. Especially you CMC, who has headcanons so strong about the CMCs that you take them as actual canon, and you’ll argue to the death over opinions and insist someone is wrong unless they share your own.
You want to know my actual “emotional state” about this image? Every time I see a notification on it it irks me because I know it’s going to be one of you two blabbing on about the same crap, because someone disagreed with you. That’s the extent of it. So keep telling yourself whatever you want to believe. You guys got duck badges for a reason.

Yes, you are panicking. Because you assume that small error up there will be in the movie too, while it clearly won’t. There’s a lot more at stake with the animation quality of the movie than with promo art, no one can afford to fuck this up and no one will.
It’s by being so negative and pessimistic and with saying that it will be seen like this in the movie that you are panicking.
Just chillax and play some games or listen to music, or something, until you have calmed down and can see it clearer. You’re only making yourself worried.

I agree with CMC Scootaloo. All you’re doing here is just panicking like it’s the end of the world. And for what? Just some admittedly awesome artwork that you don’t like?
I like how I point out something I’m not fond of, and suddenly I get you on my case telling me to “stop overreacting” and now trying to tell me I’m panicking and going to “make myself feel really strange”?
How about this? YOU stop overreacting and trying to ascribe emotions to me that you’re incorrect on. I don’t like what appears to be a redesign. I am not “panicking” nor “overreacting.”
You’re the one that’s making all kinds of assumptions here about what this image really is. Tell me, how do YOU know? You’re assuming, nothing more. In fact, if one were to look at it objectively, it would seem you are the one panicking and trying to justify the obvious change above.
So how about this, instead of continuing to assume what other people’s mental states are and how they’re so wrong for expressing an opinion, cut it out before a mod tells us to knock it off, and/or you earn a second duck badge? I was there when you got the first one. You seem to be unable to accept anyone else’s reasonings and/or your opinions except your own.
Again. This is not about her general, new design. That’s not what I’m talking about.
What I am talking about is the error you pointed out, with the streaks in her tail having the wrong thickness.
That is just an error. An error on the promo art. An amateur error even.
They won’t make such a mistake for the movie. And no, this is most definitely not a picture of Twilight that was cut ouf a screencap from the movie. This was specifically created for the promo and nothing else.
At this point, you’re not just panicking and doomsday talking, you’re making up reasons to justify your panicking.
Stop this. You only make yourself feel really strange.
You know what makes absolutely no sense, right? Beside the fact that this is literally a copy and paste from an official lineup for the movie, you’re trying to say they just got “sloppy” and did the art differently? No. It doesn’t work like that. If they were copying and pasting generic vectors, yes. But this isn’t a generic vector. This is her new design.
People swore up and down the plushies with wings on them were a manufacturing error, too.
Sigh….. It’s promo art. People don’t put as much effort into promo art as they put effort into the actual movie, as paradox as that is.
What you said here about the purple streak in her tail is already the case for the pink streak in her tail:

Usually, the pink streak is very broad and the purple streak is thinner. Here, it’s the opposite, so what most likely happened here is that the artist creating this picture confused the purple streak with the pink one. He was making promo art, so he probably thought it wouldn’t matter much if there’s a small error in it and didn’t pay much attention. Or he noticed the error after completing it, but didn’t bother to correct it on a picture that is just promo art.
This kind of lazy work won’t happen for the actual movie animations.
The expense is the only hope I have of it remaining exclusive to the movie. I’ve seen more than one show that went from the small screen to the big, and the resulting increase in budget resulted in them deciding to make it “fancier”, which IMO lost something of the original in the process.
Even if they don’t keep the additional shading, we might still see some changes to their designs for “brand conformity”, as it’s called. So things like the ears, the increased rounding of their snouts from the front and Twilight’s highlights could very easily end up back in the show.

Not necessarily. After six seasons, the artwork of Friendship is Magic is practically synonymous with the show itself, while this new art style helps to make the movie stand out. I doubt they would cheapen that effect for the film and tamper with the gift horse (pun intended) they already have for the show. Besides, the new art style, with its greater level of detail, is almost certainly more expensive than what’s currently used for the show.
Did I say it wasn’t? The movie is what I’m talking about.
And every time another piece of art comes out with her redesign, people always say “It’s just promo art, it doesn’t mean anything.”
Well, four years ago people were telling themselves that the leaked Alicorn Twilight design was a mistake and didn’t mean anything.
We see where that went.
tl;dr: The post-movie designs will likely follow what the movie establishes. What you see now could mean their designs will also change in future seasons of the show.
Actually, this is just a redesign made exclusively for the movie.
…Also, I’m with CMC Scootaloo on this; you really shouldn’t overreact to this.

People have been saying “it’s just a promo picture” every time new art is shown.
No, it’s not just a promo picture. It’s her new design. ALL of them got slight redesigns. It shows on official new artwork from the New York toyfair.

From the little bit of art shown from the movie, it appears the backgrounds are much higher fidelity than the show. And the redesigns match that style.
So keep saying I’m “overreacting”, this is the Alicorn Twilight leak all over again. We’ve got evidence staring us right in the face, and lots of people are burying their heads in the sand. But when the movie opens, you’re going to see that Twilight above.
It’s just a promo picture. Don’t overreact so much.
And let’s hope it ain’t just talk.
Not only is the purple highlight at her bangs wider, but look at her tail. Good lord it’s almost half as wide as her tail at the end. And the magenta one just kind of goes off and disappears.
I really don’t like it when they fiddle with a character’s iconic look.
