Smallpox was the first vaccine ever made. Chicken Pox didn’t have a vaccine until about 20 years ago IIRC. I know because I had to suffer through it. Also, apparently Chicken Pox makes you infertile if you get it after puberty, which makes me wonder if it attacks post-puberty cells specifically…

Lol, that explains a lot. I was thinking smallpox was a horrible, killing disease, but was absolutely sure it was something-pox. Chickenpox, then, got it.
HOLY SHIT no It was not smallpox! Christ! It’s chicken pox and I do believe it’s something still done to this day. Since getting chicken pox when you’re young is rarely lethal, but as an adult or older it can kill. It’s meant to be a one-time illness too, but apparently some people did get it again, at which point it’s called shingles.
This going from my memory as a child. Worryingly, I never got chicken pox I don’t think, so I’m probably at risk now.
Apparently a long time ago parents would have kids with smallpox (or something?) Exchange lollipops so they could all catch it while they’re young and stronger and build up an immunity so it didn’t ruin them while they were older.
It was some disease that didn’t have a vaccine until after the 50s. Might not have been smallpox?
