Reading all the old theorizing about why a seapony princess has a sky-themed name has made me curious: now that the movie has come out, what do people think of the canon reason for that? Did it come across as being as good as what people were hypothesizing months ago? Better? Worse?

That was a troll on Meghan’s part. She said she was about to read a portion of the script, and when she said “queen of the hippos”, she was “told” it was the “wrong script”. Besides, “queen of the hippos” sounds more like Queen Novo, the seapony queen and Uzo Aduba’s character; a fancy word for “seapony” would be “hippocampus” (Greek for “sea horse”).

Even before the confirmation that Sia’s character design was indeed real, this image already shows that the celebrity voice actor for this character is Kristin Chenoweth, who was also the very first known celebrity guest star attached to the movie, way back when the movie itself was announced. So the odds of a placeholder design and name for this character were already pretty slim to start with.

That’s still possible. A picture with a seapony we haven’t seen before appeared, so, this might be who Sia is voicing. This seapony could be Songbird Serenade and the ponysona of Sia is just a placeholder because they don’t want to reveal her role yet.

Should be common knowledge already, it was announced at SDCC last year that Sia plays the “queen of the hippos”, you maybe should try to Google that.

I don’t know what you are talking about. Sia was confirmed to voice a pony called “Songbird Serenade” and I don’t recall anything about that pony being a queen.  
We also got a queen revealed now, so this makes it clear that Sia’s role does not involve a queen.  
Though, with that reveal now, you could still be right about Skystar not actively ruling, as Queen Novo might be her mother.  
But even in that case, the name is still very unusual. She’s still a seapony living underwater and as princess, probably meant to rule one day, which brings me back to my question why her parents named her that.
