Makes me think of a bit in South Park; like Sunset would be all like: “What? Why did you pan to me just now? What the Tartarus is that supposed to mean?”
@Josh103
Celestia, Twilight at times and Starlight all most definitely qualify for the unreliable narrator position. They blatantly miss the mark and the point of issues in so many episodes…
But, isn’t 6 seasons a bit too long for unreliable narrators to stay, y’know, unreliable? Isn’t that also bad writing?
Celestia’s legacy in the show(herself, Twilight, Starlight) has basically always been that of the unreliable narrator protagonist.
By the way, I wonder if Starlight perhaps just isn’t as smart as she thinks, or we are supposed to think she is. At least after her initial apperance, as you touched upon. Starlight tends not to listen to input, is dangerously trigger-happy with her magic, doesn’t like to wait, doesn’t think things through, and we never see her work on her mind, like studying.
@Starswirl
So in other words Starlight is really bad at explaining things….
The S6 pony who says she couldn’t enter Celestia’s school at the same time of Sunburst because she could couldn’t with her talent, the pony who says she stole cutie marks out of philosophy differences revenge from unsatisfied satisfied ponies that are now still in an isolated support group of a village desperately seeking Starlight’s guidance getting on with their lives because Celestia’s system works…
….and the picture was just a reminder of a far better written character many have accused Starlight for valid reasons of being a badly written copy of her.
Hmm…can I critique the comic for her portrayal when its just as bad as her in show appearances?
I mean, if its canon for her to badly written in S6, aren’t portrayals of her being badly written in other media are kind of redundant?
Thus, all I can say about is
this is it wasn’t a perfect comparison,,
protagonist powers do not make Starlight effectual at anything,
people ARE known for comparing Starlight and Sunset.
@PonyPon
It’s a complex question given a simple, but misleading answer.
Starlight’s assertion that you can’t really be friends with a mirror is right. A mirror isn’t a person. The ponies under Accord’s influence aren’t persons either, they’re extensions of himself without an individual personality. They even yell “Join me” insteas of “us”.
That she’s looking at a picture of Sunset while explaining that creates the disconnect. Sunset Shimmer is her own person. It makes the message confusing for the sake of a reference by implying Starlight and Sunset don’t have an individual personality. Honestly, a reference to Sunset was nice, but it would have been much more effective to have Starlight here actually look into a mirror while making the comparison.
@Jarkes
Maybe, but regardless they both have some similarities.
Both unicorns, both formally evil, both used to be rivals for Twilight, both easily reformed, both have similarities in their names, both are exellent magic users, both regret their past, and have it effect their self esteems. Just to name a few things.
@MadVillan
Honestly I would prefer an edit of that Discord wall break that went something like “What? Not only did I only get nine pages in an arc about me, but people cared about a background gag more than anything else? Ugh, this is like that time I ran into that mailmare.”
@CronoM
It’s not illogical if you see what the guy said. He claims that Starlight Glim Glam was created because they can’t put Sunset in the show.
Well, first you have to prove that the FiM writers were even contemplating in having Sunset be on the show and all evidence points to “no”. You have Jim Miller stating so and even if you disregard Miller’s statement there’s no proof that the writers were even contemplating on having Sunset be on the show and then finding out they can’t. Fact is that the first movie was supposed to be a one time thing and Sunset stays behind. Come RR and her role was supposed to be that of a minor character until her character role was revised. Again no proof of any intention of transferring the character over from her franchise to another.
Plus Sunset is not crazy popular. She’s absent in a lot of EqG advertisement and last I checked she wasn’t on the banner of the official eg YouTube page. She also wasn’t part of the original Mini wave and she has taken the backseat in favor of scitwi. She’s popular with the adult fanbase but I don’t think she’s “mega” popular. In the grand scheme of things she’s pretty much ignored by FiM.
Starlight Glimmer is a completely different character with a different background and personality. Calling her a clone or a cash in is a bit inane. Maybe they did recycle some ideas but Glimmer is far from a clone.
