“Mainstream media” is not the same thing as how society at large treats people.
 
Remember, media and entertainment is often more progressive than the country at large. They were overwhelmingly for gay marriage years before it was legalized, and even further back, it was common for entertainers to promote racial equality even before segregation had to be ended by federal mandate.
 
Don’t get me wrong, it’s great that people in the media are as supportive as they are, but it doesn’t paint a totally accurate picture of how people are treated in day-to-day society.

I really didn’t want to reply, but I strongly disagree. Find me a piece of mainstream media that has anything other than the highest of praise for transgender people. It’s the same way in school. There may be bullies, but the kids are taught that it’s wrong to bully, ie it has no mainstream acceptance. Transgender people, like everyone who isn’t a straight white man, are treated as saints in mainstream culture.

Transgender people are one of the most maligned groups in our society. It’s certainly gotten better, but they’re still largely treated as social outcasts and many trans people face a combination of intense relentless bullying and crippling loneliness.

I only have one other thing I want to say: If the best solution for “gender dysphoria” (aka body dysmorphia) is transitioning, then why is the suicide rate of post-op transgenders the same as the rate for pre-op transgenders?  
You can respond to that if you want, but I won’t respond in turn.  
I won’t lie. This was actually a stimulating discourse, and I enjoy hearing what the other side has to say, just to keep myself in check. I hope you feel as enlightened as I do. God bless you.

It doesn’t matter who started it. Trump’s in office now, not Obama; By continuing a bad policy, it’s still Trump’s responsibility. This is wrong and it needs to end. He’s talked about ending it, but it’s not happening correctly. Furthermore, his new executive order is changing the 20-day time limit on hearings to allow for indefinite detention, which is unacceptable. There needs to be a time limit on how long undocumented immigrants can be held in custody.
 
The reason I use the term undocumented immigrant is simply because not all of them are here illegally. Some legal residents lack documentation for any number of reasons, so “undocumented immigrant” is a broader umbrella that covers both legal and illegal immigrants that lack the paperwork to be here.
 
The purpose of the trials is to determine whether or not they’re legally allowed to be here. Without a trial, how do you even know if someone’s not a citizen or legal resident? You don’t. Due process for non-citizens is still necessary to protect the rights of citizens.
 
The transgender ban is wrong because it’s a sweeping ban of an entire class of people. Transgenderism is recognized as legitimate by the medical community, and the most effective “treatment” is transitioning to the identity that matches how they perceive themselves. The suicide rate is so high because of the rejection they face in society; The more accepted they become, the lower the suicide rate drops.
 
Trump’s popularity is irrelevant to my approval of him. Whether I disapprove of him with most of the country or all by myself, I do so because of my observations of his presidency and actions in office. What other people like or don’t like about the president has no bearing on my position, and frankly, it shouldn’t on anyone’s.

They’re not “undocumented immigrants.” They’re illegal aliens. You wanna talk about language setting a dangerous precedent? That’s it. Also, “family separation” wasn’t Trump’s idea. He’s just doing what Obama did. Those photos you’ve probably seen of kids inside fences? Those are from the Obama administration. Also, they technically don’t have the right to a trial since they’re not citizens.  
I’m in the army and I support the transgender ban. I don’t want people with such a disproportionate suicide rate serving alongside me, because I simply wouldn’t trust someone that unstable with my life. And let’s not beat around the bush. “Gender dysphoria” is a mental illness that we’re encouraging people not to seek treatment for. That’s why their suicide rate is so high. (inb4 someone dismisses my argument because it offends them)  
Trump’s approval rating has risen since he became president. Also, every time a president has faced controversy and protest during his first term, he’s been re-elected by a wider margin. It happened with Reagan. Hell, it happened just fourteen years ago with George W. Bush. Expect the same with Trump.

I think the fact that he pandered to people with anti-Muslim prejudice, whether or not he was sincere at the time, still sets a bad precedent. Re-tweeting fake crime statistics about black people from a Twitter account called White Genocide is a major problem.
 
Going by his actions in office alone, there’s the family separation of undocumented immigrants, making calls to revoke due process or trials for undocumented migrants (which is kind of the only way to prove they’re here illegally in the first place, meaning legal residents could be targeted under such a scheme), the transgender military ban, etc.
 
These are all serious problems that need to be fought back on. And that’s why in November I and many others will be voting to try to do what we can to protect our most vulnerable from this administration’s harmful policies.

It’s pretty clear to me that Trump said and did whatever he needed to say and do to get enough votes. I judge people by their actions, not their words. Similarly, I’m judging Trump by his presidency, not his campaign.  
Moreover, people in general sometimes say something and change their mind later on. It’s as simple as that.

I’m referring to the ban he proposed during his campaign, where he said - verbatim - “Donald Trump is calling for a complete and total shutdown of Muslims entering the U.S.”
 
Please address the fact that Trump did propose an actual Muslim ban, even if he could never actually enact one.

I agree that a religion shouldn’t be outright banned, and so does President Trump. It’s not a Muslim ban. It’s a ban by country, based on a list outlined by President Obama of Middle Eastern countries whose people represent potential threats to the United States. It doesn’t include countries with the highest populations of Muslims, such as India and Malaysia. As far as I’m concerned, it’s nothing more than an expression of sovereignty.  
By the way, may I just say, I’m shocked none of our comments have been removed so far. Usually the mods go into panic mode the moment anyone brings up anything remotely political, especially Trump.

None of this justifies banning Muslims. We are a country that does not impose a religious test, period.
 
I mean, if we go by the “They’re allowed to lie” clause, then what’s to stop bad Muslims from just lying about being Muslim altogether? What do you do then, just ban Arab people on the basis of their ethnicity, because they’re “probably” Muslim?
 
Again, the solution is to police actual criminal offenses, not religion.
 
Not just as a half-Arab child of a Muslim immigrant, but as an American, I’m pretty skeezed out by the idea of imposing a religious test on American citizenship. That flies in the face of what my country is about, and I for one am glad that Trump did not have the power to make that particular campaign promise a reality.

From a practical standpoint, can we agree that the solution is not banning people of a particular religion, but rather, banning illegal practices - whether they be sanctioned by religion or not?
 
You don’t go after Muslims. You go after genital-mutilators and honor-killers. You go after people who abuse their families. You go after people who attack LGBT people (or anyone), whether it’s religiously motivated or not. America has plenty of Muslims and pretty much no issue with Islamic fundamentalism, because we police that shit.
 

 
Irrelevant. Anyone from any background can lie. Criminals lie about their crimes, whether or not they believe those lies are sanctioned by God.
 
You know a person’s character by what they do more than what they say. Most Muslims in America just go to work, spend time with their friends and families, pursue hobbies, etc. just like anyone else.
