I think we’re talking past each other.

The current labels exist because of the factors of attraction that our modern western human society decided are important. However, these factors aren’t objectively more important than others.

The image implies that pony society is different from human society, and they don’t attach the same importance, and therefore don’t use (or have any need) for the same labels.

When you said “I think the word you’re looking for is ‘bisexual.’”, you were wrong. They’re not looking for that word. They don’t need it. Maybe they need different words that are more important to their society, like “attracted to pegasi only” – pegaphilic, or “attracted to ponies that have a penis or a horn” – cornuphilic, or “attracted to creatures that can walk on clouds (which includes pegasi, griffons, and some unicorns)” – whateverIdon’treallyknowLatin.

“Bisexual” only makes sense from the human perspective. This image is saying “Ponies don’t have the human perspective”, so your original statement is inapplicable.

Currently, people attracted to the same sex face the reality that they’re not allowed to have the same relationship rights (i.e. marriage) as their heterosexual counterparts. This restriction doesn’t exist for other kinds of preferences. As long as that’s an issue (and I look forward to the day that it isn’t) these labels will be relevant, like it or not. (And trying to remove these labels is not going to convince anyone whose mind needs changing, before you say that.) Having this argument is putting the cart before the horse.

The world doesn’t need that detail any more than it needs to know whether the people I’m attracted to are of the same sex as me. As you said, “outside of those you are attempting to have relationships with”, it’s irrelevant. But homo/bi/hetero gets special treatment that it doesn’t deserve.

OP here:

Huh, didn’t expect this to be taken offensively, so sorry about that, although maybe I should clarify:

  1. This is purely meant to be headcanon, so never me stating some kind of truth.

  2. I more imagined ponies just don’t use the words “straight/gay/bi”, although many of them will fit these categories. I kind of drew this from them using “special somepony” instead of “colt/fillyfriend”, which seemed to indicate that gender doesn’t factor into a pony’s lexicon in regards to romance. Among them, their is absolutely no significance to what sex you pursue, so long as it makes you happy.
-2a. Mr. and Mrs. Cake seem to oppose this, however, but then they’re one of three married couples I remember seeing, I dunno what’s up with donkeys and I dunno if Cadance and Shining Armor ever use the terms “husband and wife” or just “spouses”.

So, sorry for quacking, I was trying to chirp.

It doesn’t necessarily distinguish because frankly there’s no point to a label that specifically defined outside of the user’s own head. Knowing what you like is well and good, but outside of those you are attempting to have relationships with, the rest of the world doesn’t need that level of detail.

The problem with “bisexual” is that it does not distinguish, for example, “Attracted to feminine women and masculine men” and “Attracted to androgynous people”. Yet that distinction can be just as important and powerful as the one between “attracted to the same sex” and “attracted to the opposite sex”. The point is that the whole homo/bi/hetero category system is arbitrary.

There have been human societies which never had this concept.

If asked, a pony will likely give a response consisting of some combination of neighs, snorts, and whinnys. Them being non-sapient animals and all. If you want to make up stories about the MLP ponies, fine, but that’s your headcannon, not actual cannon.

This is factually incorrect. Horses are one of many species that sometimes display homosexual behavior.

Odd, I must have missed the episode that established this fact.

Well most ponies don’t have a society, so the other alternative they’re all straight due to the basic drive to procreate and carry their DNA onto the next generation. Or in simple terms: They’re all straight.

I get where you’re coming from and you can say Dash is a straight as an arrow, but by your logic they all are.

I think the word you’re looking for is “bisexual.”

Humans have this concept too.
