That's something I'll never really understand, even though I know it's a thing. I'm too empathetic to_*want_* to put characters I like through hell, unless they're self-inserts. I'll do it for story purposes, but the point is that they deal with it and come out stronger. Hell, even the writer friend I have, who routinely comes up with horrific plots, does so because it's what she naturally creates rather than because she gets any real enjoyment out of it.
So yeah, I don't get it either. I can't imagine making a character you like suffer, for the sake of making them suffer. It just sounds like sadism to me.
