I said it wrong, sorry. I didn’t mean to say she’s a typical pony. I meant it in the sense that she’s a single pony. she stands on her own. she’s alone in a crowd, is what I’m saying basically, a handicap many of us have to deal with.
a magical timeskip
out of time and budget? time for a training montage! :D
her villagers, whom she last fired a deadly blast at before running away, now want her to practically be in charge of everything.
many ponies appreciate stability in their lives more than safety. otherwise ponyville would have a population of 6. they’re familiar with starlight leading them, so I can understand it. still doesn’t excuse a cheapass montage, instead of devoting s6 to starlight’s recovery.
If it wasn’t for Trixie’s scenes with Starlight, Starlight would be completely unrelatable.
oh believe me, some of us are fucked up enough to relate with her in other episodes, like around certain stupid sexy chin beards.

@redweasel
Most definitely agreed.

The only thing I’d have to disagree with you on is the empathy part at the beginning. “She’s just…a pony”? I know Twilight Sparkle has set the bar for the show pretty low in terms of normal character empathy, but Twilight and Starlight are the exceptions, not the normal’s in that area ‘with no supernatural ability to understand others’. Most ponies/humans have an average level of empathy, which is way more then they have. Their ignorance towards other’s feelings and moral blank spots are supposed to be unnatural to everyone except Celestia.

Back to Starlight, you said it yourself, Starlight’s basically on parole, or at least she should be, but S6 takes place after a magical timeskip where they’ve all become the closest of pals sans all logic. Spike hugs her the next episode after trying to time screw Twilight and Spike, yet she can’t actually relate to any of the other 6 despite supposedly being friends; she’s supposed to be a criminal who is working towards redeeming herself, but she’s already well respected as Twilight’s personal apprentice long before doing anything significant, and her villagers, whom she last fired a deadly blast at before running away, now want her to practically be in charge of everything.

Everytime we try to spin our view of Starlight to make her more likable then she actually is, the hype the show gives her gets in the way. She’s a karma houdini, and the only one giving her character a chance to connect on a personal level is Trixie. If it wasn’t for Trixie’s scenes with Starlight, Starlight would be completely unrelatable.

Starlight isn’t the worst thing ever, but they handled her character with so many mistakes in the most automatic and artificial ‘friendships’ so far. Instead of easing us into her friendship with the Mane 6, they just throw us right near the late middle stages with no explanation, just a montage. Instead of filling the blanks of her backstory, they white-washed her actions to simple, generic villainy and made her backstory make even less sense. Instead of focusing more of her time on understanding the basics with people she can actually relate to, they just shoved Starlight into the Mane 6 group.

Even you have to admit, using mind alteration on them the 2ND time, the first time when she was still a cult leader, and the second time after they were supposedly friends, is not a mistake one can shrug off and say ‘she wasn’t thinking’. If she’s actually empathetic about her past misdeeds, the very idea of using mind manipulation on them should of set off thousands of alarm bells in her head screaming ‘I’m doing it again!’, ‘I’m using magic on my friends unwillingly!’,‘This lesson is not worth messing with or hurting my friends!’

Granted, the third one rarely registers to even Twilight, but that’s why Twilight is not a good barometer for morality.

I like her because she’s unempathetic. she doesn’t have any supernatural ability to understand others that gets glossed over and left unexplained. she’s just… a pony, and fearsome magic powers don’t make her more than the pony she is.

but I also hate how they’re forcing her on us by making her automatic friends with all the main 6. if they wanted to do starlight episodes, they should’ve done starlight episodes without them involved.

it’s a little easier to tolerate if you realize that her friendship is actually a form of pony parole, and they’re her parole officers, so it didn’t come out of absolutely nowhere. also explains why she has it, despite (or because of) being really terrible at friendship.

No she didn’t, and then she needed it pointed out She was thinking clearly, it’s just she has no empathy at all.
And I’m not jumping the gun if the synopsis for the entire arc confirms it:

What me not like a unemphatic, overly forgiven, forced plot element that shoves aside characters who have been here for years so that they can praise this new force thing that is unintentionally unsympathetic? Perish the thought.

She did feel bad about it when her eyes were open and when she realized what she did when Twilight pointed it out. So yeah, she wasn’t thinking clearly. And stop complaining about the whole “Mane 6 need to be given the boot or made stupid”. The story arc isn’t even over yet and you’re already jumping the gun. So quit being stubborn and wait for the story to be over before making “criticisms” like this.

Though I doubt that would change anything because it involves Starlight and I get the impression that you just don’t like her.

An honest mistake? An honest mistake is getting a lunch order wrong or forgetting your friend’s name, not taking away thier free will. And she was thinking clearly. She deliberately did it and saw nothing wrong with it, the only problem she had with it was that the Mane 6 screwed up her orders. She was sorry only in thay she had some anxiety and got caught, not that she took away thier free will.
Secondly it never showed that mind control wad bad.
And why wouldn’t anyone else be just as concerned? The Mane 6 have been mind controlled twice, they above all others should be more concerned than Starlight is, but they’re not because it’s Starlight’s story so the Mane 6 need to be given the boot or made stupid in order for it to happen.

It’s not hypocritical. This kind of thing is always shown as a bad thing, and so far characters have been the most hard of Starlight about it. And besides, it was an honest mistake because she wasn’t thinking. A lot like Twilight way back in season two. And from what I’ve seen, only Starlight is the one who’s showing concern about this because she of all ponies would know how bad this is.

So you’re callin’ hypocrisy for nothing.

No. That’s not what I was trying to say. I’m saying that at it’s core, both episodes are the same. They both completely miss the point of the lessons (they both took it as literal assignments) and thus resorting to radical decisions that cause trouble. And besides, Starlight lost control too. So you’re just proving my point even further.
