So as some of you may have noticed by now, avatars on Derpibooru have gotten a little bit more colorful today! The site’s old default avatar (a white silhouette of Lyra) has now been replaced by an algorithm that will randomly generate a unique background pony. So now every time you post anonymously, or just don’t have an avatar, you’ll now have a colorful, randomly generated pony next to your post.
 
Where will these avatars show? 
They will show on any post and made by a anonymous user or user posting anonymously (“background pony”), as well as any post, comment, or private message made by someone who does not have their own avatar set.
 
Will they be different on different threads/comments? 
They’re generated using your displayed name as a seed. So if you are posting under your account name and don’t have an avatar, the same pony will follow you all around the site. If you’re posting anonymously, you’ll have a different pony in every thread/comments section (for the purpose of helping you maintain anonymity).
 
Is there a chance of being an alicorn? 
No. There were a few accident alicorns created while coding and testing this feature, but they have since been banished to Mary Sue Island, and the code has been fixed. The code will only generate Earth Ponies, Pegasi, and Unicorns.
 
How many mane styles are there? 
Three at the time (based on Lyra, Blossomforth, and Cloud Kicker) of writing. A few more will be added soon. 
There’s twenty two possible manes now. Collect them all!
 
Will there be colts? 
Because of how the SVGs for these avatars are generated, that would be rather difficult to implement, so we’re not planning to do that at this time.
 
Can I make my own pony using this template? 
Sure! This upload is a SVG file, feel free to download it and use an SVG editor (such as Inkscape) to customize it as you please.
