Going to assume you’re referring to the image, but that’s obviously meant to be a gag, not something to be taken seriously. Honestly, you can probably blame the fandom for the existence of that one, because it was floating around for a long time before that, and a lot of people drove it into the ground.

@Scrounge
I already explained why the two currrent princes aren’t alicorns; there’s nothing to suggest it automatically comes on a silver platter alongside a title, and Shining Armor and Blueblood’s circumstances are much, much different than what Twilight and Cadance have done. Alicornhood can be earned through certain requirements/feats or however you’d like to put it. The two ascended ones we’ve seen, Twilight and Cadance, didn’t get to be an alicorn through title alone, they did certain things and had certain qualities to get there, and Flurry Heart was born as one, which makes her an exception to the rule (good luck explaining that one). And Celestia and Luna are clearly different in some way, being immortal and all.

There is no distinction between a prince and princess in MLP, nor is there any real indication that you have to be an alicorn to be a princess. There seems to be a distinction between alicorn and non-alicorn, but again, gender is totally irrelevant there because alicornhood can be achieved through earning it and being a good and benevolent leader. Shining Armor could do it, I’m sure, but the show seldom gives a lot of focus to non-primary characters, and I’d reckon to make it believable, it’d have to be it’s own story arc of sorts. The drama if they tried to fit an ascension into a single episode or something would be intense.

Also, the Big Mac anime thing is most likely a Sailor Moon callback. That sort of over-the-top transformation sequences were a part of that, right? Never watched it myself, but I think I’ve heard enough about it to know that.

The princes we’ve seen aren’t alicorns, whereas it seems like being an alicorn is a prerequisite to being a princess. How you choose to interpret that is your business, but I’m not trying to imply anything other than it’s weird how they don’t seem to carry the same implications.

Complete with anime-style transformation sequence.

I don’t remember the exact wording, though fair point for the distinction if that’s the case (a total lack of understanding does seem silly/hyperbolic or whatever), but my point still stands there. I guess you could say he didn’t understand the magic of friendship like Twilight, or something along those lines, and that’s why he failed to become an alicorn, if that’s a better way to put it. Too tired to nitpick too much about the exact wording here.

Anyway, probably heading to bed soon.

Starswirl would have become an alicorn prince if he had understood friendship, but Celestia specifically mentioned that he did not.

This is a bit of a nit pick, but its an idea I’ve seen stated about Starswirl on TV tropes and such before and I feel it merits clarifying. Namely Celestia never said Starswirl didn’t understand friendship (heck we know he befriended Scorpan), she only said that he didn’t understand it the way Twilight did, i.e. enough to complete the spell and create all new magic.

It’s just a joke, or perhaps an analogy of sorts like someone above suggested, don’t take it so seriously. Obviously if a stallion ascended, they’d be an alicorn prince.

@Scrounge
Nonsense, of course it does, don’t be ridiculous. Starswirl would have become an alicorn prince if he had understood friendship, but Celestia specifically mentioned that he did not. Either way, gender is completely and utterly irrelevant to alicornhood, because most of the ponies who have it got it through being a good and benevolent leader and stuff like that. Only reason Shining Armor doesn’t have it is because he’s prince consort, and while we don’t know much about Blueblood, he likely inherited his, perhaps from the unicorn royalty bloodline.

You can damn well be sure that either gender can be an alicorn. It would be incredibly, overwhelmingly sexist to suggest otherwise, not to mention it would completely and utterly destroy their legitimacy, because genitals has no relevance whatsoever to what you need to make a good leader. Ascension is earned (it would seem they can be born naturally too, who knows what the deal with that is, but that’s for another topic), and you’d have to be quite delusional to think that gender would matter at all for it.

I don’t necessarily expect to see one in the show itself as long as Hasbro’s marketing department is fully convinced that princesses sell toys and thus need to be pushed at every opportunity, but that certainly doesn’t mean they don’t exist, and there’s no reason whatsoever for them not to. That would shit all over and heavily contradict the messages of the show, which involves gender equality, even if it’s not in your face about it. And it wouldn’t fit the setting at all, because Equestria is quite clearly gender-egalitarian. There’s no indication whatsoever of either gender being advantaged or dominant, there’s no gender roles, they have de-jure and de-facto gender equality, and there are ponies of both genders in all sorts of different walks of life, and so on.

On another note, this is an awfully long reply on a picture about a minor joke.

Damit, stallions!! What’s with YOU wanting to be princesses all of a sudden??? (uuhhh, not that I have a problem with crossdressing and transgender people; I just find it weird that it’s a pretty common of a pony trope)
