See how Derpy started in first place? And she gradually drops in performance as her eyes become more misaligned. It can be assumed that she attempted corrective surgery to fix this issue. Didn’t work.

Oh I just thought of something that might this even more depressing. Imagine for a second that the headcanon of Sparkler being Derpy’s first daughter was real, and this relatively shortly after her birth. The reason Derby went and got this eye surgery was because she thought fixing her vision would help her better provide for her first daughter. And unfortunately as we see in the future it didn’t stick.

Or, clumsy mare that she is, she just smashed her face into something. A through something. Like a window. It’s not like there’s a rule that says you can only bandage the eyes/face in the aftermath of eye surgery.

Eh, it’s true that we’ve seen images of Derpster with her special eyes before this, but I’ll still take this as a retcon “origin story” of sorts. To each his own.

I don’t think the surgery actually failed. Sometimes her eyes are straight. If anything, her condition used be way worst before the surgery.
