It helps when I know a small amount about brain anatomy, the frontal lobe is responsible for higher reasoning, decision making, and personality. Turn some on it off along with a few other parts and your just a Biological robot. The frontal lobe also helps with emotions so that could explain why they don’t seem to have any

Holy crap this is amazing

My guess is what that spell does is shut down parts of the frontal lobe and higher reasoning centers rendering the victim incapable of making conscious decisions of any kind while and rendering them unable to rationalize the orders they’re given, such as they couldn’t figure out the orders make no since or are counterproductive, they only know what was given and due it to the best of there ability. That’s also why they obey every order to the letter, they can’t figure out if something is a metaphor, accepting it literally at face value.
