It’s pretty sad that no one talks about Tirek, but I suppose that attributes itself to how “complete” he was; His background? Exposition at the start. His motivations? Explained in the episode. His fate? Clear. The events of the episode were more interesting than he was. Granted, he’s one of the more likely ones that they’ll revisit if there’s ever an episode based in Tartarus, but for the most part? He had everything shown, making nothing unknown. As a result, people don’t have much ground when it comes to alternatively interpreting his actions.
Thorax… I thought the character was alright, but as I think more about it, it’s less a matter of his character, and more a matter of the environment they put him in; the episode made the character, rather than the character making the episode, as Chrysalis did. And by the end, we learned little about Changelings, and not much about Thorax.
Who talks about Tirek anymore? He was cool in the beginning, but people lost interest in him afterwords. Part of me want her to be motherly to her kind/children, but so corrupt and evil that she views others as inferior (in a non-racist way), and is willing to kill/enslave others to keep her own kind surviving.
Also, I hope Thorax isn’t the exception, but the others see that their Queen/Mother knows what she’s doing, and understands much more than the ponies could.
I definitely prefer Chrysalis to be more or a tragic villain whose warped perspective is the reason for her actions towards others; Admittedly, the best way for a villain to be written is to make them as pure-evil as possible to better contrast the good nature of the protagonists, but for that, well… that’s sorta why Tirek exists.
Chrysalis was never written well in the show, after all, and was made a bit more evil in the comics, but it hardly changes how they could’ve done a lot more with her character by giving her motivations a bit more clarity… It took four seasons before they even touched on the concept of Changelings again… and even then, it’s still so vague.
Yes, but people can easily darken and lighten the gays they want in order to make one side “good” and the other “bad”. I do admit that part of my problem is that I like Chrysalis to be “evil”, not because she’s evil but because she sees strengths in conquering and feeding her children the victims of war.
Well it’s a matter of perspective; it could go the route of a colossal misunderstanding between the two leaders, and besides, is there ever really a truly good “side”? It’s not like there’s truly any black and white when it comes to issues in life… just grey. Lots and lots of grey.
I’m not saying that, I just feel that it’s too easy to make Chrysalis a victim, and Cadance the abuser, and after seeing how she views redemption, I can see it going that way. And war’s caused by desires and wants, not good and evil.
What makes you think it’s going that way? For all we know, there is no “good” or “evil”. Both do what they have to and their views differ, so there’s conflict. Not every conflict or war is good against evil. Especially considering both sides think their own side is the best solution.
