Forgot about that scene. Still, why did she feel lonely? She still had her friends and Scoots, and the residents of Ponyville didn’t hate her, just sick with her need for attention.

What they were doing was teaching Dash that you can save people and be humble. She saw it as someone trying to replace her. She couldn’t share the spotlight with someone. People need a slap in the face every now and then to realize when they fyay up, and this was Rainbow’s turn. Also, I never saw her spirit break. All that happen was that she became more despite for praise, and people called her out on it, to the point of trying to get rid of the competition.

Yes, and watching as RD got insanely pissed over it. They were knowingly antagonizing her by being incredibly passive-aggressive.

THAT is the key difference there. Not to mention, Rainbow Dash was letting it get to the point where she cared more about the attention than actually saving lives. THAT was why she needed a wake-up call.

Doesn’t excuse the fact that they deliberately went out of their way to crush RD’s spirit, what with the “fly by” and such.
 
…and then going off bragging endlessly right in front of her, literally watching as she got really pissed off.
 
But hey, she had it coming, right? That’s what friends are for.

I love how everyone forgets that Dash listens to actions better than words, and them telling her about her ego wouldn’t have helped at all.

I must admit, this is my concern about this episode as well…  
But the situation seems to be a bit different than in MMDW, so I’m withholding judgement until I actually see it.
