There’s a great depth to this piece, a powerful statement about the human condition.
 
Berry, with her obsession with wine and any other spirits she can get her hooves on, represents our carnal desires, our inner hedonist, that part of us forever seeking those animal thrills. She lives only for pleasure, even if those pleasures ulitmately hurt her. She cares not - she lives moment by moment, and the only thing more important than this moment is making sure the next one is even better.
 
Carrot, however, as both a farmer and with a love for her namesake, represents our better half. She seeks to create, to feed and nourish. She supplies both herself and others with good things to eat. She works to make life possible. It may not be as fun as her other half, and it certainly takes a great deal of hard work, but she strives on, a smile on her face. She sees the future, she works for it, knows it can be better. Not just for herself, but for many. She is civilization at its finest.
 
And here we see both of these ponies joined together, forever pulling against the other, trying to take the lead. Their battle will wage on eternally.
 
Yet, this piece carries a certain nihilsm to it as well. We see this is the blue void that surrounds them. No matter who wins this struggle, it will lead to nothing. A terrible, hopeless fate, won from an eternal battle.
