She is being brutally honest yes but it tends to pointless and needless anyway. Being pointlessly negative or insulting is what she does since a lot of what she says is stating the obvious when it is not need which often can be very insulting. Was it really needed when she points out Twilight’s speech was bad or when she refers to her as a doormat when Twi already knows?

I’ve seen a lot of pictures and fics characterising Sugar Coat as pointlessly negative or insulting about everything, which is not really what she’s supposed to be about. As the dark reflection of Applejack, she is the Element of Brutal Honesty and won’t sugarcoat her words.

Sugar Coat, Sour Sweet, and (to a lesser extent) Lemon ~~Tart~~ Zest are the only ones with enough characterisation to actually show some of the mirrored Elements they were supposed to represent.
