In the event that anybody missed it, the Sherlock and Watson ponies showed up again in the episode, and the Watson one was sporting a fine ‘stache.

Yes, definitely read the originals… My parents met over an original Sherlock Holmes book, so I’ve been taught from a young age that they’re about the pinnacle of classic literature.
I think these designs could be inspired by the episode where it’s based back in Victorian London But yes, both inspired by the classics.
(I’m thinking of reading some of the original books.)
