Most name-calling is bullying. Teams who are this bad at communicating or who don’t notice jack about their own behaviour perhaps aren’t worth joining.

She didn’t even know it was an insult with Soarin. She thought she was being singled out, and it wasn’t unreasonable considering what went down. And that’s the problem, she had no idea they weren’t aware of how much they were hurting her. Which is kinda what I would expect of a team.
 
Well, maybe not a team who lied to one of its members so they could trick someone better into joining instead.

Fuck the Wonderbolts: they’re a bunch of self-centered jerks who can’t even do their job properly (Seriously, when was the last time they actually rescued somepony?), betray their own fallen teammates, frame their own members for a crime they never even committed, and are just an insult to military forces everywhere.
 
I don’t even see why Dash would want to be a part of these douches, especially since they had the nerve to call her a “newbie” in today’s episode (Why didn’t she snap at them? I know I would.). There’s nothing enjoyable about the Wonderbolts anymore, so fuck `em!

Y’all should probably be made awares, on the teasing and terrible nicknames, this is actually how real life Air Force pilots are. Like, all of them.  
EDIT: And on the subject of accuracy to actual military, remember what series this is. They aren’t exactly good at subtlety or nuance.

Except they weren’t bullying her. Rainbow Dash THOUGHT they were bullying her. When Soarin first got called his nickname she should have suspected something but she ended up dismissing it.

Poor communication kills. Rainbow nearly messed up her chance to live her dream, while the Wonderbolts were in the process of bullying out their most promising recruit in who knows how long. Both sides were wrong here.

what i’m getting at, is you know how when commercials and such try to be TOTALLY RADICAL and full of internet memes and such and you look at it just cringing like a mofo? a guy who doesn’t know how the military works writing military creates the same effect.

doesn’t matter. they’re clearly trying to emulate us air force with how the wonderbolts act, but not doing an even remotely accurate job. it’s like when the makers of silent hill homecoming intentionally put people who had no idea how the military acted behind writing alex’s dialogue as foreshadowing that he was never military to begin with and is just insane: it sticks out that much to anyone who even has an idea how military culture actually works. also, like @Dashu said, being military myself it honestly irks me a bit how people sincerely think “just make them jerks” is how you write military characters.

What I learned today: You have to be a total asshole to be in the military. Well, I didn’t really expect anything else.
 
Also, it’s weird how they make the Wonderbolts like a military without actually making it a military organization.

I’m a little surprised they didn’t have a, “Why are you acting so weird, Crash?” scene. I think Spitfire almost did that at one point, but didn’t really go the whole way in asking the question.

All the Civs getting made at the Wonderbolts while all the Military Bronies are getting mad at RD for being such an FNG. Seriously, this is literally every unit in the military, OPS NML.  
We make fun of each other but we do it in good nature.

that’s a good point, although i think it should’ve been pretty obvious that something was up due to how desperately she was trying to put on airs for a group she’s already wowed and impressed multiple times. personally, i’m under the assumption that the wonderbolts are aware of how desperately she wants to be a part of them and to what lengths she’d go to in order to impress them. i would think they’d at least suspect that dash was poorly obfuscating her insecurity and trying very ham-fistedly to improve her image - and it’s not like dash would ever admit her shortcomings to what appear to her to be very judgmental ponies that she also desperately wants to impress.

yeah man. granted it’s not really anyone’s fault, so much as the people writing them just have no clue how military works outside of watching top gun. they act like internet tough guys trying to convince the world they’re hard military.

well, on one hand i can totally see why they come up with embarrassing nicknames for one another. if you’re working on a team it’s definitely a plus to be humble and self-deprecating and not let egos get in the way of relationships. on the other hand… they really should have made that particular team dynamic clear from the beginning instead of acting like middle-school bullies and waiting until after the poor rookie humiliates herself repeatedly to explain their motives. i mean yeah, i won’t deny that dash has an ego that can be a disservice to herself and others but isn’t good communication a keystone to a good, effective team?
