You just made me remember of myself. Once I had this long state of comfort within me, which abruptly ended when a unresolved conflict resurfaced due a certain trigger. The ego did run berserk and lost myself in the process.  
Thankfully, due my will to face my conflicts head on. I came to understand them and thus was able to let go of them.
 
But yes, I agree with your statement. RD literally just had her Bad Fur Day again. :P

Well lets also point out that Rainbow Dash is a very emotional kind of person, not saying it in a bad way just it’s how she’s always been. Her mood and her attitude can change how well she does things. Remember Sonic Rainboom? She lost it, like big time and was flying WORSE then Rarity who had wings for about… half a day at that point. So, yea, the whole Rainbow Crash thing got to her massively.
 
Rainbow Dash’s emotions span the whole spectrum of emotions at times and always at the forefront of it. She’s always vocal and honest about how she feels though sometimes she’ll be very quick to deny it if it’s not an awesome thing. She’s crashed a lot. The first crash for instance in the training academy was her being star struck and just in awe at what she was seeing. Since then it was a nose dive of emotions for her till she really went big.

I whole heartly agree with this and the former statement of yours. Perhaps it would have been better if some other pegasy pony like Lightning Dust had to go through the initial ritual. Unlike RD, she still need to learn alot more.
 
Using however RD for the lection was uncalled for by the writers. It left me with a sore taste in my mouth.  
If we could rewrite/redo the episode I would include Lightning Dust as a new member to the WBs as well. Instead of RD doing mistakes, LD does them instead. Due the change, RD’s first expression on the WBs would gain her a somewhat different, but still teasing nickname. However LD gets the really embarrising new monitor.

I absolutely hate bullying, but I think if an adult can’t ask other adults to stop then something is wrong with him/her. (Or that writers decided to make him/her stupid for one episode…)
 
But on the other hand what should be friendly “insults” sounded really malicious (and really childish too), as @Macharius said.

In the Air Force, it’s standard to give each other nicknames. They’re your call signs, and you never choose your own. It’s generally chosen based on either something you screwed up or a play on your name. They do, in fact, even put this name on your flight jacket. This is not only normal, it is EXPECTED. It would literally be an insult NOT to be given one.
 
This episode doesn’t show they are childish; it shows that the writing team does their research.  
And that Rainbow Dash doesn’t do her research or even pay attention, because any ‘newbie’ should know this is going to happen by the end of basic training. In real life, people do not react like Rainbow Dash, because training has already weeded out anyone that would react as she did.

I think poor voice direction for the Wonderbolts’ actors plays a part here. “Rainbow Crash” was supposed to be a standard-issue embarrassing nickname that everyone gets, but pretty much every time it appeared it sounded like it was being said with genuine malice which obviously gives the completely wrong impression to the viewer.

I’ve forgotten where in this thread, but I got the idea to have the Wonderbolts say a bunch of these lines:

To anyone who would call the Wonderbolts “terrible” based on this episode have no idea what it’s like to work on a hardworking team to overcome obstacles. Insults don’t mean “abusive” and “childish insults” don’t mean “childish.” I’ve gone through leadership training (which I can tell most have not) by having to camp with four other complete strangers and become a team by the end of the week. One guy was named Tobey, and we said “don’t do a Tobey” after he burned himself on a hot pan. He did it twice and we used it as a phrase. Was it mean? Yes. Was it hurtful? Not at all. Hey, they called me “buck-tooth” due to my horrible jaw alignment which was something I really (like i slapped the guy who said it) hated, but I got over it. By the end of the week, we were a great team and I hated leaving them to go back home.
 
I’ve seen morons say that this ep is reminiscent of PTSD, which insults people who have PTSD.

Not sure if that was clever or not, but at least it un-derails the thread.

Being called an unflattering nickname to remind you of a particularly bad day, and to motivate you to improve on your weaknesses, is standard procedure in the military. The Wonderbolts weren’t calling her Rainbow Crash out of malice or to be abusive or hurt her feelings, and they had no idea about her being bullied in flight school, either. They were simply doing it to motivate her to better herself. And, as they said, each of the Wonderbolts had their own embarrassing nicknames as well when they were starting out. Everyone is subjected to this treatment when they join the Wonderbolts. No one, not even Rainbow Dash, is exempt from this rule.
