That’s strange, because there are literally thousands of images with empty source fields.
True, once you fill the field you can’t erase it, but you should be able to leave it blank during the initial upload.

The site won’t let you leave that field blank, I tried. I requires a proper url and since this is the only place I post it’s as good a placeholder as any.
