I was always taught as a kid to keep my elbows off the table while I ate and I know it was a thing people did not too  
long ago, though I don’t see that applied today much. I was always curious about that rule.

Interesting fact: Forks were not considered acceptable as dinnerware for centuries. There were multiple objections: One, it was believed to be unacceptably snobbish and unmanly to poke something with a fork rather than spear it with a knife and tear off chunks with your bare hands. Two, they reminded people of pitchforks and similar implements used to tear up sod and dung, especially since they only had two tines at first. And then when there were three, some brought up the Devil. Yeah, it’s weird how vocal people were about it.
