You’re probably right as this character is based off Houdini who used illusions he was probably in the box while the manticore ate a dummy. Trixie probably didn’t know this as Houdini took his secrets to the grave so this pony probably did too and she just went very literal with it.

Well, considering chewing would probably kill/heavily maim somepony, I’m going to go with option 2. Though it probably is trying to invoke that for the purpose of making the trick more impressive.
