There were three… thingamajigs that looked a bit like the Tesla Coils in Command & Conquer: Red Alert below the dam in The Mysterious Mare do Well.  
If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say they’re meant to represent a high voltage transformer or three.

Inconsistent tech level has been around since season 1. And the show hung a lampshade on the nudity thing during “The Best Night Ever”. Seems kinda silly to be complaining about it now.

I imagine they have multiple sources, ranging from hydro, wind, coal, and crystals.
 
If I’m not mistaken, Tank’s propeller is powered by some kind of magical energy right?  
Crystals can easily be concentrated fossilized magic, that might be why they are used as currencies and eaten by dragons, probably to fuel their flames.

That is true, but until they reveal a magical source, it is logical to assume it is regular electricity.

Honestly I think they just don’t think this through. They don’t care about the background lore of technology in Equestria, they just use whatever technology they want when they want. It’s a combination of us adult viewers thinking too hard and the writers taking the easy route and writing what they feel like rather than writing to the confines of established lore.
 
Electricity isn’t much of a stretch, nor is steam power and some simple gear and piston based machinery like construction vehicles, but we will know there is a very bad problem and the tech writing has jumped the shark when we see a pony booking flight tickets on their computer over the internet and then they take a bullet train to the airport just before texting their relatives on their smart phone… That tech level belongs in Equestria Girls as a way to differentiate the two outside of “one is Pony one is Human.”
 
On another only vaguely related note, I see they are still also uncertain as to what Ponies think of wearing clothes. Sometimes they wear clothes, sometimes they don’t, sometimes they talk about being naked or get embarrassed when they lose their clothes, and so forth.

I loved the detail in this scene that the keys they played, are the actual keys you need to play the intro tune! So many time you see that the keys they play doesn’t resemble anything of the tune they are palying, so it is nice to see the animators to it precisely right

In our world, a lot of technological innovation (by no means all, but a lot) comes from military development. Many technologies get used for years by militaries before “trickling down” to civilian consumers.
 
Now the interesting part is that the Equestrian military seems to be stuck in the equivalent of our 19th century, if not earlier. It’s unlikely they are the drivers of technological progress.
 
Equestria’s technology level will be wonky by our standards because it’s driven exclusively by civilian, not military interests.
