It’d be interesting to see how you could modify the hair to look more natural from that angle, since you’re right, hair should be coming off more than just a stripe down the middle…
 
I would say for humans, and horses manes are just a stripe down the middle, and then I realized that we do see ponies that have hairstyles that would be impossible if the mane was just a stripe down the middle like on real horses :P
