I believe he conjures the fur and the gauntlets help him control it. So they’re like inhibitors.
 
If he’s anything like Twilight he’s training till he doesn’t need them.

So can Spike the pyromancer conjour his own fire or does he HAVE to use that napalm gauntlet?  
I say only I little bit at first from his mouth. But as the story goes on and he meets his friends, the fire builds up. Until the end of the second season(?) When one of his friends is slain and he goes full Dragon. His gauntlet breaks when he grows twice his size, gets scale armor and breaths fire like a Pure Dragon until his friends are able to calm him down. Then his hands are permanently replaced with claws and has his ear fins and tail.

There has to be a shounen series just for him.
