Anon writefag here. I’ve been writing a story about a Tatzlpony in the Strange Waifu Thread, because I was intrigued by the notion, though bothered by wondering what advantage a creature would gain by swallowing another creature whole, only to spit it up again later. I came up with the idea that tatzlponies are telepathic - that they can communicate and read thoughts and feelings with their tentacles, and can also read more thoroughly by swallowing new creatures they meet, in addition to being intensely curious.
 
In addition, in line with the nurturing quality mentioned earlier, the females, at least, can exercise some healing on creatures that they swallow. FWIW.

That’s more or less the same with me, except she doesn’t have a regular pony tongue and has just needed to figure out how to use one of her tentacles to speak.
 
The way I see it her entire anatomy except the mouth itself is more tatzlwurm than pony, more or less making her almost a tatzlwurm with legs and a pony’s head. Thus, the capacity of her stomach (or crop) is massive, letting her hold close to 3X her body size in it.

I treat the tenta-tongues like they appeared on the tatzl itself, emanating from much deeper inside it than the mouth. How else could they draw something back down all the way into her crop? I also give her a regular pony tongue in addition to the tentacles, as well as regular pony teeth (That’s the main ‘nope’ of the split jaw for me, when they add weird cheek-teeth, especially spiky teeth) so that she can talk and generally look more or less normal when not opening extra-wide.

I have little, if any, love for the split jaw. I think her mouth is strange enough without looking like a dental exam by HR Geiger.
 
Still, people feel that way about the tongues and even tatzls in general, so…

I like the trifurcated jaw just because it adds to the tatzl look. (And because it makes it so they don’t have to dislocate their jaw to do their thing.) But I also go for the big floofy tail crest, because you can never have enough floof.
 
I think of them as curious and cuddly critters, whose propensity for swallowing their friends and such is an act of intimacy and protection, as well as being a thorough examination. I very much enjoy that sort of idea, evidenced by having had my own (non MLP related) original species that has a similar species-wide constant of ‘eats people, but not in a particularly harmful way.’ for the last decade or so. (Mine being snakey alien things that feed off of ambient heat)

So there’s this dude DTK here on the site who takes screenshots and edits them to be quirky, silly, or downright terrifying depending on what mood he’s in. He also makes some nice spoiler pictures for the site. Whole gallery is here.
 
One fine day, he made this and came up with this ridonkulous description about them describing them as if they were a pet. And the concept just appealed to a lot of us artists. Me, Keith, and Heir-Of-Rick to name a few all pounced on the idea with Heir-Of-Rick even including Tatzljack as part of his Miss Pie’s Monsters blog.
 
So far the more or less universal consensus on what they are and how they act, since DTK didn’t think it would become a thing and thus never really gave it any thought beyond that one picture and basically just embraced what everyone else did with it, is that they swallow loved ones to carry in their stomach (or crop) which is designed specifically for this purpose (no digestion or suffocation), and that they’re otherwise basically just a normal pony with the eye markings, tongues, and tail of a tatzlwurm. Some artists give the species the split jaw and spines on the tail, others forego the split jaw and have fur up the tail or just at the tip, all of which is just preferences of course. My personal headcanon is that they’re very motherly and protective of loved ones, but since their means of doing this is down the hatch it can cause some problems or misunderstandings from those who aren’t expecting it, and that Tatzljack is her own separate entity from Applejack, and sometimes they even exist side-by-side (I draw her hair down and messy when that’s the case).
