So… If they’re not alive, does that mean gems, a la’ Steven Universe, aren’t alive since they don’t seem to be able to reproduce on their own? Xp
Believe it or not, that rigid definition for life is debated by almost every biologist and chemist. No one can even agree if viruses are alive or not.

When the collection of matter is undergoing processes that are self-sustaining, the object is able to reproduce, take in energy from its environment and produce waste and respond to stimuli :p
It’s useful to use definitions for this stuff. Biology isn’t as exact as mathematics, logic, or even physics, but it’s still very useful - especially since medicine is an offshoot of it.
