The IRS pays thse companies a fixed amount to cover returns for taxpayers who can’t afford it. There are limitations - a max income of $62,000, and som schedules (Schedule C /self-employment) aren’t covered - but for a lot of people this will cover th hard part.

I always eagerly look forwards to it. H&R Block sends me each year’s program since I got it for my accounting classes. Its cheap. And my tax situation is simple enough I could honestly just file it myself basically for free with a 1040 EZ since I just have a standard W2 with no deductions, exemptions, dependents, etc., but I’m lazy. And since I’m working poor, I get like 70% of all the taxes deducted from my paychecks back as a refund and don’t even have to worry about figuring out what my state health insurance would be filed as, since I don’t make enough to get fined even if I didn’t have any.
 
TL;DR: I love tax time because for me, taxes are effectively just a government imposed saving program, so I get several hundred dollars back when they roll around.

Last I did it it was just a lot of paper management. I just go through TurboTax.
