A shows ability to grow deep emotional connections from it’s characters to a fan is something that most shows never seem to grasp. The reason why MLP is so popular is because of the fan base and it’s deep thoughts and emotions. Why do you think Scrubs was so well received? Or Futurama? The Show creators knew people liked to laugh but they also knew they liked to cry and feel. MLP did that, admittedly on a smaller scale and designed for smaller children, but the fact of the matter is, the show made its viewer base make a connection with the fictional characters as well as the staff and crew who bring them to life. The fact that I take Shipping Big Macintosh so seriously isn’t because I take fictional colored horses seriously but because I care for a true story and not just eye candy so people buy stuff. Remember the storm that followed Princess Twilight? In hindsight we can see it from a mile away. But because it’s delivery and the release of what followed the reveal was done only as a marketing ploy instead of an actual story, it wasn’t accepted.
 
The MLP fandom is full of deep topics. Loss, love, griff, the political and social ramifications of gay rights. We are deep thinkers and the show and fandom shows this fact.
 
Yeah I do onto deep ramblings about topics and other stuff that quite honestly don’t matter. I can go on and on how our lives and this debate is utterly pointless and anything that we think matters is superficial and how it will all fade away… I don’t need you to remind me. I don’t need you to inform me that this is all a show and anything I do will not affect it or what it’s creators decide to do. I’m not an idiot. Thanks for downgrading my observations to that of a five year old who cries when he doesn’t get to play ball. Really it means a lot. See you all tomorrow.

It’s not like every named and voiced character in the cartoon can get a canon Establishing Character Moment for each, a la characters from Joss Whedon’s Firefly, if you’ve watched it.
 
MarbleMac is just there now for the trend’s sake. Really sad.

I wouldn’t mind Marblemac if Marble had actual character. I mean, it isn’t joked that she is a chatterbox like it is with Big Mac. We don’t know if she is good at anything, we don’t know her likes, dislikes, Nothing! The only thing we can gain from the short amount of time she was see is that she is someone who is so sheltered and so far into her shell that she makes season 1 fluttershy seem like an excited filly just waiting to meet you. The reason I dislike this ship is that there is no chymistry. No. I’m not talking about their shared shyness and who is quiet the most. I am talking about things that they have in common. I’m talking about the things that make their characters who their characters are. Their personalities and how each individual trait of one would affect the other. How Would Big Mac help her grow into a better pony? How would Marble? We don’t know the answer because we don’t know one side of the equation. At least with the Fluttermac we know who what would happen. Fluttershy would become stronger as an individual pony not requiring others to help her face simple problems due to her irrational fears and Big Mac would become less aggressive in the face of defeat, more humble, less likely to try and prove himself, and all of his good traits would increase dramatically. How do we know this? Because they have fitting personalities. Not because they are “Cute” but because each individual has traits that fit with the others. Not because they are the same but because they equal each other out and or are similar enough as to not strain the possible relationship.
 
To be frank, as of now for the Marblemac isn’t a good ship.
 
But it can be…
 
She is a completely new character that if the writers wanted to they could build her so that she could be the perfect match for the lovable oaf. But instead we have another Flash. If you don’t want another flash give her growth.
 
Why am i so passionate about this? Because Big Macintosh isn’t just a random background pony who’s character was made by the fans. No, Because he is too important for this kind of back burner handling. He is what every guy strives to become. A loving brother/father so strong that nothing will ever hurt the ones he loves out of fear of his revenge. He’s not just eye candy like Braeburn or Soarin. He has a story, He raised his sisters, took hold of rains for his family and kept his family’s farm afloat, all the while dealing with the pain of loss. We as fans, we get to have fun pairing him with relationships that might work. But the writers and animators? He’s like the main six. He’s too important and too close to the hearts and minds of everyone to be treated like that. At least not without some fine tuning.

According to Flash’s inconsequentiality which grows with every movie, it even seems more likely that Twilight and Sunset would become a couple…

It has no show related value, though. Discussing Sparity may take a whole thread just like it’s happening now with MarbleMac. I don’t see any reason to discuss Sonic/Dash or Spiderman/Twilight.
 
On the other hand, shipping haters want to completely stop any discussion about any friendship in the show even though they can’t predict if all of them will stay friends forever.  
My view is the middle ground between extremes.

most shippers are like  
what if  
random character + random character—–>friendship  
and then  
friendship——>romance
 
 
while antishippers are like  
romance=0, let’s discuss anything beside romance

I don’t see why it’s required for a ship to be canon or even possible for canon to be a ship. Some people ship certain couples solely because it’s cute and nothing more, and as long as one understands that it’ll probably never be canon, there’s really nothing wrong with that. I couldn’t care less if someone shipped, say, Sweetie Belle with Rumble, or Big Mac with Braeburn, or even Discord with Trixie.
 
No matter how weird or unrealistic a pairing is, as long as the shipper is sane enough to acknowledge that and not expect the show to pander to them, I don’t see the harm in them thinking it just looks cute.

I meant more like excluding from show discussion pairings that REALLY have no chance of becoming canon. Like Chrysalis/Celestia, Shining/Twilight and whatnot. And focus on show discussion in which friends are involved. Like “Is Spike going to date Rarity or will he eventually move on” or “Would Discord completely turn into goody two shoes if he was dating Fluttershy” or “Would Marble and Big Mac marry to officially connect their families” sort of questions that contain the show accurate relationships. This is actual discussion of their character development and their future in the show.
 
Shipping doesn’t need to revolve around “cute pairing X3” or “Nuh-uh FlutterMac is better than MarbleMAc” or “Nuuuuuuu My waifu was stolen XO”. You don’t actually have ot be a shipper to discuss this. Is more about what is the current motivation of these characters rather than personal taste in visual portrayal of two random characters in a romantic act.

I came to like MarbleMac so much that as soon as I saw Hearthbreakers all my CheeriMac fantasies went out the window.
 
But I see no reason to lament over anything; CheeriMac isn’t going away and neither is FlutterMac or any other Mac ship for that matter.

Not shipping any characters seems a little extreme. Honestly I have no problem with people who decide to promote their favorite ship, wether it be through fan art, fan fics, etc. It’s all part of the fun after all. Just as long as they don’t get too up in arms and start randomly attacking those who don’t agree with their pairing.
 
I might not like marblemac, but for what it’s worth, at least this’ll the people who like the ship happy. The actual comic might not be about it, but who cares. Variants are always like that.

Reminder that this is a variant cover and not in any actual comic. Even if it was in a comic it would most likely be in the background.

The problem to me is a lot of people don’t seem to me really understand it and take it to unrealistic and unreasonable lengths in shipping. Plus the subject of the show is friendship, it seems to take away the focus of the show. The show is not your personal power fantasy.

Accepting that they aren’t canon, won’t be canon, and don’t hope or beg complain that they’ll never be canon, don’t focus on those particular shippings too much and keep them in fanfiction where they belong.
