Detailed syntax guide

I think the Nightmare was originally meant to crush Luna’s emotions so she can focus on destroying Celestia (Similar to how in Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Izanami wears a mask to crush her emotions). Somewhere along the line it escalated into the Maleficent homage we love to hate.

Actually, Luna used a method that Luna used is the same thing that Freedy Krueger uses in his nightmares: Use their fears to shape their dreams. In Luna’s case, she used their fears to teach them lessons.

Would you two stop it?
Luna had nothing to do with the CMC’s nightmares except for stopping them, by resolving the underlying problem of each filly.

Scootaloo was scared of spooky stories, so of course she dreamt of something creepy.
Sweetie Belle was jealous and afraid her sister outshines her, so she dreamt of that and Luna had shown Sweetie Rarity’s side of the event by her dream.
Applebloom was worried that her cutie mark would define her, so she trapped herself in her own insecurities.

The only thing Luna did was end the nightmares.
Also each of them was an allegory of Luna’s own past, so she probably was also assuring herself.
Nightmares come on their own, because of stress, high emotional tension or other factors.
But, like I said, there’s a possibility of Tantabus’ influence.
After all, the dreamscape has doors to all of the dreams/nightmares.
Background Pony #88FA
@CronoM
Yes, yes, that’s what we see.
But there’s a possibility that Tantabus snuck off without her knowledge.
Or just a tiniest bit of it. That would be enough for it to influence the dreamscape.
CronoM

@C Money
I’m not really mad at all, I’m just curious why you are acting so vague and shifty all of a sudden. That last sentence in this reply especially.

@C Money
Unlike the Sweetie Belle dream episode, Luna didn’t seem to have anything to do with Bloom’s nightmare. So not likely.

No, that’s not what hat I clear my throat for. I clear it to gain a group’s attention. To “stand out”, if you will. And I never said what kind of headcanon that I had, so… Yeah. Don’t-uh… Don’t know what you’sa so mad about.
Background Pony #88FA
@CronoM
Perhaps Luna is subconsciously influencing the dreamscape?
Or perhaps Tantabus was slipping into other dreams by that point?
Background Pony #88FA
@CronoM
It didn’t have to be Luna or Applebloom’s evil side. It might have been just a regular nightmare.
You can’t read in a dream/nightmare but talking is possible.
CronoM

@C Money
Yeah, clearing your throat ONLINE WHILE TYPING is basically code for “Shit I fucked up that information. Um, let’s ignore that shall we? (clears throat) Anyway…”

Classy.

So your headcanon was Luna was just fucking with Applebloom in that episode? :/
C Money
Duck - bundle of quacks

@CronoM
My aheming in bold lettering was representing the sounds of someone clearing their throat. And I never said that I ever followed the comic’s semi-canon. And Luna can shape the dreams of others as well was walk in them, hence the CMC’s Nightmares. Honestly, she could go toe-to-toe with Freddy Krueger.
CronoM

@C Money
Is your ‘ahem’-ing a reference to something? Cause if it is I’m afraid I don’t get it. Seemed too specific to be completely random, but then again I don’t know you very well (shrug)

Based on what you said in this comment @C Money, its clear you are changing your stance to ‘that’s what it said in the semi-canon comics along with my own ideas’, to ‘that’s an idea I adopted from the comics, along with my own ideas, even though the former wasn’t actually true.’

Cause I have no problem if you have a headcanon outside the comics. Nobody should. But that specific statement did seem to imply that you believed that’s what it said in the original comics.

That’s cool. I noticed that a ton of people make judgements and headcanons on the comics by looking up specific pictures, while only some actually buy every comic their interested in and read every page in a linear fashion. This is what creates so much dissonance of information on Derpibooru and Equestria Daily. Its bound to happen. Consider myself untriggered :P Also, sorry if I sounded rude earlier.

Just one question about your PDH though…how does it fit within the context of Applebloom’s nightmare episode?

Its been established from the start the Mane 6 and the CMC have vast amounts of potential, hell, they’re our main characters. And if I was to pick one, Applebloom was the most clueless and frustrated about her fate since the beginning, not including Scoot’s wing issue of course.

All of the CMC had nightmares, but Applebloom’s had an actual voice to her nightmares and a mind of its own pulling the strings, a nameless apparition Luna identified has Applebloom’s own nightmare.

You shared your headcanon, so I’ll share mine. Its always been my personal headcanon that all ponies have the potential to have ‘Nightmare personas’ within their minds since all ponies have some level of magic. (I’ll capitalize Nightmare everytime I’m referring to an embodiment of darkness, not just a bad dream)

Of course, unless your a goddess or a demigod, it taking hold in one’s dreams due to uncertainty or hating who you are… wouldn’t do much beyond slowly erode positive attitude. Negative emotions from an average joe aren’t going to have any potential to grow from, while the repressed, negative emotions from someone with high willpower and high levels of frustration(in this example, Applebloom) can actually have a Nightmare gain a voice within a person’s dreams, and the Nightmare of a goddess like Luna, can form a Nightmare that can actually manifest in the material world physically and create a completely new persona. In Luna’s case, Nightmare Moon.

This was a headcanon I had long, long before Applebloom’s Nightmare episode, but even after the Nightmare Rarity arc, I was still unsure whether it could happen to any pony, or just ponies like Celestia or Luna. After the episode, I was more sure about my headcanon, even if it isn’t completely confirmed.

Point is, the fact that Applebloom’s personal nightmare gained a voice all on its own, even if just in her dreams…doesn’t that poke a hole in your PDH? And I’m not just talking about a specific visualized person or creature they envision in their dream, but something that appears from their own shadow with no name or context.

@C Money
If we’re talking headcanons, then my headcanon is that Luna wanted night to be longer (daylight sayvings?).
But Celetia didn’t agree over and over again.
So on that fateful night, Luna got so angry, she considered deposing Celestia and made the eclipse.
But what she forgot is that creating an eclipse would release the nightmares captured there by her ages ago.
One of the nightmares used Luna’s lowered cautiousness to force a posession.
This, combined with Luna’s anger and loneliness created Nightmare Moon.
And it was no longer her goal to force Celestia to abdicate but to bring night eternal.
And considering we’ve seen the outcome in the finale, it might not have been so bad…
After all, Rarity mentioned tourists and that shows that Nightmare might not have been a bad ruler.
Probably a benevolent dictator…

@CronoM
AH-HEM! Mm. Huuuuuuuuuu!

It’s called a Personaly Developed Headcanon, or PDH for short. In my PDH, Luna was only slightly jealous of her sister but understood that sleep was a necessary thing for ponies… Until one night, where a power-hungry evil from the badlands wanted to satisfy his hunger using a princess. It got Luna, and ended up evolving into a modifying symbiote. And it got to Luna before she could attend a party that she was going to hold at night.

@Background Pony #832F
Except Tantabus could also be taken as a metapohor of Luna’s guilt. It overpowered her.
And who helped? Ponyville residents, the same ponies who welcomed her after the Nightmare Night misunderstanding was cleared.

Luna’s aloof personality (royal behaviour nonwithstanding) is the result of whatever the heck happened before that flashback where she and Celestia faught. Just remember, the castle of two sisters was heavily trapped and Celestia remarked how Luna loved to play around with guests.

So we can assume that because of whatever happened before the fight, the fight itself and the subsequent banishment have totally inverted Luna’s personality.

—
As for the rest of you throwing headcanons around. Remember, the comics are nice, but they are just their authors headcanons. They can’t be taken as canon unless they are referenced to in the show.
CronoM

@dynamicv
(scratches head) But…for what reason?

Nightmare Moon was an inverted, Darth Vader-esque corruption of Luna’s psyche. The classic ‘evil-half’ of someone who possesed immense power when absolute power corrupts absolutely.

There would be no reason for Nightmare Moon to be influenced by anything else, she was her own darkness incarnatate.

If you are trying to imply that Nightmare Moon herself was killed in the series premier, even during the Nightmarity Arc, I don’t think that’s the case. With Luna’s dreamscape and darkness magic, Nightmare Moon existing outside her original body as a separate entity, and doing all the things you think the ‘nightmare forces’ are responsible for, is more then plausible. In fact its all but stated.

It just doesn’t seem to be that likely, especially given this…… Nightmare Rarity not only thought like Nightmare Moon, she had actual memories of being Luna. She wanted to be a part of Luna again but Luna refused.

Its an interesting idea but I just don’t see the point. I think the “Nightmare Forces” are as much Nightmare Moon as Sauron the Eye was also Sauron the living, walking corrupter. The same being.

@CronoM
I thought maybe Nightmare Moon created the Nightmare Force’s “mind” in her own image (rather egotistical when you think about it), and that’s why it shares her desires and personality. I doubt she intended for it to influence her like it did when she created it, I figured that just happened gradually over time due to having no one else to talk with but her own mind’s creation.
CronoM

@dynamicv
That’s a pretty cool headcanon, but why would a personification of darkness need to create another personification of darkness to influence itself? That’s the part I don’t get.

For the Nightmare Forces and Nightmare Moon to have any reason to be separate entities, it would be that Nightmare Forces only embodied darkness while Nightmare Moon was Luna’s embodied darkness that wished to retain itself and exist, of which the Nightmare Forces were a means to that end.

…But from we’ve seen, that isn’t so. Nightmare Rarity had most of Nightmare Moon’s personality with some of Rarity’s darkness caught in the mix. The Tantabus was pure darkness and nightmares. Nightmare Rarity identified partially as Rarity, and partially as Evil Luna.
CronoM

Anyway, if were going by the most well written comics, Luna’s descent into darkness WAS partially Celestia’s fault, and also partialy an effect of being princesses in the middle ages.

In Pinkie and Luna’s comic, they actually explain something they never elaborated on in the show. Luna reveals that 1000 years ago, both of the princesses had to act as Regal and emotionally distant as possible. It wasn’t modern times where monarchy are casual with the common people, it was 1000 years ago.

As for the other half, that was elaborated in the comics as well, I think #19. Since Celestia was put on such a pedastal by not just the ponies who praised the Sun Goddess, but also being Luna’s unbelievably powerful and perfect big sister, it caused a rift, and Celestia admitted that distancing herself from people and not showing her flaws to others as a major problem in her personality. (It was a bit of beautiful character development Celestia had that deepened her bond with both Luna and Twilight on a personal level) Which, of course, never appeared in the show :/
dynamicv

@CronoM

In my understanding/headcanon I always figured the Nightmare Forces were a part of her, but after seeing “Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep” and reading Nightmare Moon’s FIENDship comic I now also think Nightmare Moon created the Nightmare Force to control the Nyx in order to spread nightmares. Like the Tantabus, it had a mind of it’s own and encouraged Nightmare Moon to keep spreading nightmares. Though the part that remained inside her was removed by the Elements, the creatures on the Moon remained under its control until the events of Nightmare Rarity.
CronoM

@C Money
Oh sweet jesus there are still peopple spreading that lie about the fake nightmare forces?

C Money, what do you call something that a character says is a truth in a story, then shortly afterwords admits in her own head several times AND admits to everyone in the finale of the story that that truth is actually a complete lie? Is it still truth?

Of course not! Its obviously a lie!

I just don’t get why people insist on spreading this rumor. Do some people think reading issue 5-6 without reading the other half of the Nightmare Rarity arc will give them accurate information?

Elaboration: After Luna internalized to herself at least once or twice that she had ‘already lied to them about something’, when Nightmare Rarity nearly defeated Luna, Luna broke down and admitted to the townsfolk that the Nightmare forces being a separate entity was a lie. Nightmare Moon was the dark half of her psyche personified, completely born from her own darkness. Due to the longevity and power behind it, that part of her actually managed to separate itself from Luna, very similar to King Piccolo separated from Kami in Dragon Ball.
