If they’re going to do an EqG finale, it should include getting the whole gang together, including Princess Twilight, Starlight, and hopefully having the other Equestrian counterparts finally visiting, as well as Sunset’s old mentor Princess Celestia.
Edited
Odds: 6-1 for Starlight 7-1 for Sunset.
Regarding the comparison of Starlight and Sunset, you answered your own question. Season 6 has not started yet, we have not seen enough of “good” Starlight to gauge her as a character beyond that of a monstrous villain.
I was talking about her little town which was backwards, dilapidated, dysfunctional and disturbed, where everyone was incapable of performing any task adequately, nobody was capable of cogent thought and advancement and where everyone seemed insane.
Any world ruled by Starlight would die from it’s inability to sustain itself and advance.
Are you referring to the desolate bad future? If so, how do you actually know that this future is from Starlight ruling Equestria? There isn’t anything that indicated that Starlight was ruling Equestria in that future. In fact, there was no clue given to indicate the one that was responsible.
Why wouldn’t a comparison of Starlight with Sunset in the first EqG movie be apt? Season 6 hasn’t even started yet.
We’re talking about the characters at their current maximum potential, not at a preferred point. It’s worth noting though that Sunset did not intend to lose the crown through the portal, she intended to go through the portal with the crown in her possession, and she had no powers to take it by force in the Human world.
Without her powers Principle Celestia herself could have taken down Sunset, and all it would take is one botched attempt to steal the crown for it to be taken far beyond her reach. Likewise if Starlight had no powers any Human or Pony could have defeated her by themselves. When Starlight’s plan fell apart the first time, she fled to plan, both are too smart to do anything rash that might ruin their plans.
I’d say Starlight was a better character than Sunset was in the first movie. Honestly, for a supposedly smart, former student of Celestia’s Sunset’s planning in the first movie was borderline retarded. As far as villainry goes, Starlight was lightyears ahead. Hell, the other EqG villains have been better too.
Some even insist Sunset is better then Twilight, and want her to replace her. (Which she kinda already did in the EqG movies.) But regardless of being overrated, I kind’a agree with Proteus, that in comparison, Sunset was a bit better developed.
Still, I can understand having passion for Glimmer, and some Sunset fans are making her seem very overrated.
While my outright calling her an inferior character may have been a bit uncalled for now that I look back, what I mean is, so far all we have seen of Starlight is her villainous side, and she had no real reason to do a lot of what she did.
As I said in an earlier post, Sunset wasn’t trying to justify what she was doing, Starlight trying to do so just meant she was at least nominally insane if she couldn’t see what she was doing was wrong, particularly because she was a total hypocrite. All of her plans were deleterious and ill-conceived, not having been thought out, all of which would result in something terrible. Since Sunset’s goal was straight forward, march into Equestria and take over, we don’t know how exactly she would rule, since the extent of her plan we were aware of was just that, march in and conquer Equestria. We have seen Starlight’s rule, and any world where she is in charge is one of ignorance, stagnation and deterioration, so her goal was terrible.
I wasn’t trying to turn this into a “my character is better than yours” argument, so I hope you didn’t see it as one. But my viewpoint is one based on logical analysis, Starlight simply hasn’t had as much time to be developed as Sunset has outside of a villain role. We have not seen what she’s like when she is nice, so it remains to be seen how good of a character she will be by comparison. Sunset has had 2 movies and a really good song showing us her development, and she still has problems and insecurities to balance out the fact she can contribute heavily to saving the day, off-setting any “mary sue” accusations. So thus far, I will stand by my decision of holding Sunset in higher regard until Starlight gets more time to shine outside of being a malevolent sociopath. Give it time and she’ll have her time to show us what kind of a redeemed character she can be.
I hate her because I find her to be very unoriginal and a nuisance. Plus I hate how people keep elaborating that she’s better than starlight in every way. Also inferior character? You do know that there are some Starlight fans out there?
Care to elaborate? You hate her because someone drew her slapping an inferior character?
Perhaps.
One thing I noticed the show lacks is a recurring villain, and I wouldn’t mind seeing one, or one of the old ones come back.
Perhaps she doesn’t believe in it without more time put it in.
She also wanted Nightmare to last a whole season.
It is starting to get a bit overdone, but to be fair, there are other villains who aren’t redeemable in the show, or don’t wish to be redeemed, and had to be defeated by other means. This also includes a few minor pony antagonists like say Upper-Crust, and Suri Polimare whom never apologized for their actions, or anything.
I think Lauren Faust said she actually doesn’t like reforming villains, which is a bit surprising considering she was the first one to do it with Nightmare Moon/Luna.
That’s honestly why this redemption obsession in the show bothers me so much.
It’s giving a bad message that these irredeemable monsters can be saved, when in real life they really can’t.
I’d say she’s at least nicer. If Sunset saw her actions would cause great harm to the world around her, she would’ve given up right then, but Glimmer (despite showing a li’l remorse in her eyes at first when she looked at the wasteland around her) at first was willing to risk that possibility just to spite one pony/person, and because of one bad experience she had with friendship. It’s rather messed-up the more you think about it.
Glimmer might possibly of been the most dangerous character in the show in a way. And oddly, it makes her the most realistic villain too, as some people have become dangerous, due to one or several bad experiences, and convince themselves the bad things they do are correct. (And sadly, they aren’t as easily reformed, nor listen to reason, as she was.)
Agreed, Skunky.
They did make her help repair the damages to the school too though.
Which is actually a bit hard on a high school girl when you think about it.
