I would say that the pickax is their for leverage. Because even though his claws and tail are excellent digging tools, Spike is still nowhere near full grown. And as a result of not being full grown their are plenty of things he would need to have better leverage for to dig them out of the ground.

It has been less than one yonk since the beginning of the series. Spike is likely only one year older than he was in Mare in the Moon. If dragons are long lived, Spike won’t be the dragon to demonstrate this. Which is another way of saying, I wish there were more damn dragons. lol
I mean the immortality thing from S1E1? I don’t recall anything even suggesting such.
Everything I said previously fully explained your question. Unless one has never seen a Spike episode or an episode with dragons in it, or has never researched dragon mythology, both new and old. This is assuming one is under ten years old. :T
I am unsure as to what you are referencing…
According to mythology and respectively FiM, dragons are immortal and invincible. Spike has demonstrated the invincible part. Obviously, it hasn’t been that long since S01E01 to demonstrate the immortal part. :3
Considering how a dragon’s bones/scales/fangs/claws/etc are often used to create the best type of armor and weapons, I’d say his are not very likely to break by digging around.
His Tail seemed more than enough, and I doubt he’d have to worry about that breaking. Also, I’m pretty sure Dragon claws where made for digging too.
I don’t see how a dragon with a pick is redundant. You can’t expect them to dig through everything with claws, they’d break! Pick axes can be replaced and repaired, claws can’t.
