I think that even if Pearl had been fully aware of how needless and self-destructive her behavior was, she’d have still done the same damn thing because she wanted to sacrifice for Rose Quartz, and didn’t care if it actually helped the cause as long as she could show how “devoted” she was.

And everyone overlooks the fact Radiant hope is WELL AWARE that Sombra is LEAGUES more durable than herself and just shrugged off one beam of comparable strength.
 
Meaning her jumping in the way of Twilight’s attack was a monumentally stupid idea and everything that happens afterwards is entirely her fault.
 
This is like Pearl ‘defending’ Rose Quartz by sacrificing herself except THAT series pointed out Pearl was being an idiot for using herself as a living shield for someone MUCH more durable than herself that she knows is powerful enough to handle it.

that would have been a great plot point, except that he was already opening the door, having after a thousand years decided to risk that it might not be evil enough. all they had to do was have him actually hesitating, which any writer with any competence would have done. and not using lame “no john you are the demons” plots, while they’re at it.

Well he made a point to state even 1,000 years ago when he had every opportunity in the world to open the door to evil he was unwilling to do so on the off chance it was not, in fact, an army of monsters but rather innocent creatures thereby making him truly alone.
