To be fair, we haven’t exactly gone into the history of the Pies until now either. A giant family heirloom that sits on a farm miles away from Ponyville is easier to accept coming out of nowhere than Twilight having a sibling she’s never mentioned. We’ve only really seen the Pie family history as it directly related to Pinkie (her cutie mark story, her relationship to Maud, etc.)  
At least Maud got a couple of foreshadows before she actually appeared.
