I read the first part of that and thought the mistake was going to be ‘challenged Celestia to a duel and is now an Earth Pony’. And also dead, because that was centuries ago.
He was probably a unicorn. You know, the one who invented the spell in the first place.
I’m guessing Whickerus was a vainglorious pegasus who boasted that she could fly higher than Celestia could raise the Sun. Naturally, her wingfeathers ended up getting singed off as a consequence of her hubris.
Probably a variation of the way the human one works. Make it about a brilliant earth pony inventor (much like our esteemed Doctor Whooves) who builds wings that let him soar like a pegasus pony would, but his son flies too high during testing and the bindings melt.
