I assure you, that is not the reason so many people don’t like it. I had never heard of him before the twitter crap. Even if you sympathize with Twilight, the episode is just kind of unconformable, rather than being entertaining at all. It has some decent moments, but it just isn’t very good overall; the episode is a little too good at making you feel like Twilight, though it drops the ball with the last inside “joke”, due to it not being funny. It kind of switches the moral to “inside jokes are terrible”, which is not a moral that I particularly object to, to be honest.
I don’t dislike Twilight for having confidence in herself. Where did you…Okay, no. We are not going to argue.
Opinions are a state of life. I thought this episode was good and Twilight’s action frustrate me at times. That is my opinion. So let’s not twist facts, or go on tangents people over an episode. It’s rather tiring.
Oh, well color me embarrassed I had forgotten that one. Or maybe I think of it more of a Rarity/Spike episode? Oh well, regardless, that is a good episode with Spike as the main focus. I stand corrected.
I think Inspiration Manifestation is generally agreed to be a good Spike episode.
I honestly hope people don’t expect Discord to pull a complete 180 on, not just his personailty, but his very “nature” as a chaotic being, just beacuse he’s super best friends with Fluttershy and learning a lesson after the events of “Make New Friends, But Keep Discord”.
I have yet to see this episode, but I’m very much expecting Discord to continue acting like Discord, even if he’s being a jerk in some areas or another.
Not to go off topic, but I can’t helo but feel that “wrote a bad Spike episode” shouldn’t ever be an excuse to dislike a particular writer. Heck, given the history of episodes with him as the main focus, I’ve begun to think the only way to ever get one everyone likes would require putting M.A. Larson and Lauren Faust in one of those brain sharing machines from Pacific Rim.
Well, Discord got his jollies from tormenting ponies before his reformation; it’s certainly reasonable to expect he hasn’t completely overcome that aspect of his personality, and has a bit of an assholish side that comes out when the opportunity presents itself.
Not sure if I want to get into “Bats!” in this thread, but I’m sorta in the middle on that episode.
Wait, This is dangerous territory for me, because I thought both AJ AND Flutters had actual points in that episode. That’s why I liked it and wished it’d focused more on that conflict.
Which is exactly the series of excuses I would turn to if I were an asshole.

Even before that, it’s portrayal of an environmental issue is less than kind to the one that has an actual point.
I thought the beginning of Bats was great. Then it kinda loses itself when the fluttebat stuff comes in. Not great, but not terrible either.
But Bats was legit awful regardless of who wrote it.
This ep was only debatably so.
I still think some of the scenes in this episode were good. Like Twilight breaking down over not being included near hit home REALLY hard for me. I thought Tara did a really good job with it.

I actually thought this episode had a bit of brilliance to it, even if the episode as a whole was very flawed.
It gives us insight into Twilight as a Princess. Her already harsh need for perfectionism and high standards for herself have been exacerbated by her ascension. She thinks she SHOULD be perfect. She refuses to believe she’s even capable of envy or other flaws, or she’s somehow incapable of being the princess of friendship. I think that’s a very interesting facet of her character. Certainly the most interesting thing to come out of her ascension.
that moral would be cool if they did not spend the entire episode rubbing that shit in her face to the point anybody would get pissed off.

It’s “It’s ok to be jealous when your friends enjoy things without you, but you need to accept that you’re jealous and work to get over it. Not make up excuses and blame your friends for it.”

is the moral of this episode really “admit you are jelly”? because that would be terrible.
i go for “you will never experience things your friends do sometimes and that is ok” which is way more, like deep and shit.
The bit where they stop laughing at Discord’s jokes. I thought it was pretty obvious that happened because Discord was being a TITANIC dick. He’d crossed a line and they were upset with him for manipulating them all like that.
But they also agreed with the point about Twilight needing to admit when she’s jealous. So Discord was right, but he was a dick about it, and so was punished. So he was right AND wrong. He was morally ambiguous. Which I think is interesting.
that last point was more of a joke.
did they explain TO US what all the jokes was in detail?
They attempt to exhaustively explain down to recreating every last detail of a scene until its pointed out very fairly that, yes, you had to be there.
No shit. As established in the season 4 opener, Discord knows full well what he’s doing. He’s literally teaching her a lesson and being a smug snake about it the whole time.
Except only pinkie drank any and she continued laughing afterwards. It wasn’t until it was revealed that Discord deliberately convinced them not to interrupt her self-imposed book exile thing for the purposes of proving a point to Twilight that they started getting upset with him and stopped laughing at the jokes.

what i was trying to say is that this episode is really damn vague on whether discord is innocent or not which muddies the moral but the big issue is that he is not innocent, he is never innocent, discord is a genius acting like a child so you let your guard down and the scary part is that he kind of is a child, a child with a nuke, when he got jealous he tore a hole in reality and tried to banish someone from it, at a whim he betrayed everybody for tarak and here he made this entire thing up to teach twilight that sometimes shit happens without you? great.
there are a billion better ways to teach this moral that does not involve a deadly god of chaos that is always fucking with everybody’s lives like toys making you rage with frustration.
I actually would disagree with you on several points. First off, the episode was rather okay. It had a good flow and narrative length. I would have personally preferred Discord having individual portions to each character, like he did with Rainbow, but eh, did it’s job.
Which was to show that moral and no, it doesn’t pain Discord as completely innocent. However, it’s a moral I think Twilight needed to learn. She was starting to go on the whole ‘I’m a princess. I can’t be jealous’ kind of thing and someone needed to snap her out of that. As well, she automatically springs to ‘it’s a spell. It can’t be possible they like him’ and that irked me. That’s a thing that annoys me with Twilight. She’s always so sure of herself that she’ll go to great lengths to do something, even when she has little to no evidence to back up her claims.
The exact problem I had with her in A Canterlot Wedding and several other points in the show. I enjoy Twilight, but gah, she can be so irritating. So I didn’t mind it and I think it was a lesson she did need to learn. That and Discord is Q of the series. Q would often give Picard hard lessons to learn, even getting some of his crew killed, and it was all for the purpose of a lesson.

this is maybe my least fav episode of all time, at least in top 5 worst episodes.
mostly because discord does nothing but wrong but is painted to do no wrong in anything.
