No, Cook and Price hate is older than that, and for a stupider reason.
It dates back to them posting a rebuttle to a flood of hate-mail they got after it was announced that the comics would have Alicorn Twilight and Equestria Girls stuff.
 
I seem to remember that; a bit of a stretch to hate Cook/Price over that, but whatever.

Admittingly, I’m a bit too positive a person sometimes.
I’m just curious as to why the fandom has turned so swiftly against Price, Cook, etc. Last I knew, the fandom loved them and wished the comics were canon….

Yeah, that was a bad arc in general and “Root of the Problem” didn’t help, but I’ve noticed that as the comics have gone on people’s expectations have either increased or changed. In any case I still love the comics overall; though I will admit a number of the main series issues have been sub-par.

No Iron Will is not a villain, he’s just a tough business man. The Flim and Flam is just crooks out for a quick and easy bit, as for Lighting Dust she’s an over achiever I don’t think that will bring her to a level of evil.

There are clouds of smoke, separate from Sombra’s main body that follow around the villains after this page. There is your “mind control eyes” equivalent.
 
Before that, they were promised various things by Hope in exchange for causing a distraction. They barely fought back against the mane 6 then (except the changelings, who truly are criminals already), but now they are going all out.

You really want me to list the reasons why this arc is shaping up to be one of the worst yet?
 
  1. Celestia and the princesses easily defeated once again.  
  2. Shining Armor is still useless  
  3. Following up a big battle with the minor villains with… another big battle with the minor villains.  
  4. Only this time, the main heroes are dumber than a sack of potatoes.  
  5. Why is Iron Will, who is unaligned at his worst, suddenly evil?  
  6. Why would Flim and Flam waste their time trying to take over an empire when monetary profit and scheming has always been their thing?  
  7. Chrysalis reduced to a cackling sidekick villain.  
  8. Radiant Hope being beyond forgiving toward Sombra  
  9. An extension of 8, but the whole “It’s all my fault” victim complex she has going on.  
  10. Some of the dialogue is just hamfisted to make sure everyone has a line.
     
    That’s 10 just off the top of my head. But no, I shouldn’t criticize. I should just eat the steaming pile of crap I’ve been served and shut up and swallow if I don’t like it.
