I think they’re just pointing out the irony in it. This wouldn’t be the first time a kid said something and it fell flat within a week. Like when I said I wanted to be an Astronaut and next week I wanted to be a Bee Keeper (I dunno). I’m sure they’ll still find plenty of things to keep them busy.

(Seriously, the writer probably had no idea her episode would be the follow-up to them getting their cutie marks, so, I wouldn’t read much into it. I think they got bored a few times when they still didn’t have them.)
