I think you may be wrong, I think it is the environment itself. How it all dwarfs the little Zecora.  
But, my opinion does feel less refined. But! I will give it a shot!

I believe the river itself and the exaggerated size and distance between everything is important here. The whole wolf/Zecora thing. They are separated by a large river. I believe this is meant to (Or attempted to) show how vastly apart they are in all forms. The wolf walks and exists at a more reasonable size and scale to everything, while Zecora is small. Almost insignificant.  
Also, something fun to point, the only source of yellow on the entire page, is Zecora’s little rings here. But, they only some what tend to stand out. I feel what would have made it stronger is if there was either brighter rings, and/or some kind of crepuscular ray or sun light highlighting little Zecora.

This pic suffers from lack of a clear value read. The focal point is supposed to be the zebra and the wolf thing, but since both are too small and lack contrast, ultimately the rocks stand out a lot more.
 
Rule of thumb: if you can’t tell exactly what the picture is from the thumbnail, the picture doesn’t have a clear enough composition.

Damn, this is the type of shit I want to draw. Trying to at least.
 
Not that cliched grimdark/semi grimdark with the hollowed out eyes and pointy fangs, but like a tasteful grimdark that leaves more of an impression on the viewer other than “lol that’s so creepy, she’s got zalgo eyes”.
 
I need to learn how to digital paint better.
