They can’t address her by name, so they call her that. I don’t think that they are implying that.
 
They definitely promote her as clumsy and crosseyed, heck, at Comic-Con they had posters of this toy saying “Who’s misunderstood?”

Many, many people in the fandom adore Derpy. Some to an insane degree.
 
If this was a regular product that could be picked up in stores I guarantee it would be sold out within a day. There would be a big demand for her from the fandom.
 
Did you see what happened with all the Zecora toys? Now imagine if that was Derpy.

Well, they could be lying about how many that they got, they might sell the rest afterwards for much more then other toys with some mumbo jumbo about it being ‘a rare chance’ or some malarky.
