I think we were just screwed because of the post-COVID inflation. You look at other countries around the world, incumbent parties got hammered.

Apparently internal Democrat polling says it would’ve been a bigger blowout. Like Trump would’ve gotten 400+ EC votes instead of the 312 he has now.

Which further proves that Joe Brandon was holding back the ticket. Would dropping out sooner have helped? Maybe, but clearly the longer he stayed in hurt more than anything.

In all seriousness, I don’t think there’s really any way to be sure that’s true. Frankly I still think the fact that the Democratic party freaked out and didn’t immediately join ranks and support him after he had a cold once did more to harm people’s perceptions of him and his poll numbers than that one debate night did. A different reaction to that and he may have bounced back, for all we know. Heck, in regards to the point @Background Human made a bit ago, as much as every incumbent party has been hit this year (fairly or not) due to inflation, I’ve seen it reported that the US actually did much better in that regard than a lot of other ones did. A bit of support and focus on what Biden did for the economy, and maybe the few thousand people that ultimately decided this whole thing would have broken for him instead.

Also, everyone seems to have forgotten that one of Biden’s secret superpowers from the previous election was that he’s basically a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a styrofoam bowl, i.e., it’s hard to claim he’s some kind of extremist with any degree of sincerity. Unfair as it may be, the opposition undoubtedly had a much easier time convincing people that the black woman who abruptly took over as candidate was all about gender identities and forcibly sex changing your children than they ever would have with the old white guy.
