Sephiroth is also arguably one of the most recognized RPG villains. Back in the late 90s and 2000s, he was on the level of popularity as Bowser or Eggman.
I hear some want Eggman in the next game, maybe in his Egg Mobile Walker.

Except Mai Shiranui never being in Super Smash Bros. I still don’t understand what the exact Reasoning was behind that, because the simple Excuse of she’s “Too Sexual” or whatever the exact Words were doesn’t sit well with me when f#cking Bayonetta(who screams Sexual & Seducing in a massive Way) is included in the SSB Franchise. :o

I’m surprised some people didn’t know who he was TBH. Because to me he’s always been one of the most recongizable villains and he brought his song with him. So people would know.

Well, FF7 is pretty old now, and has only just had a few rereleases and remakes, so he’s probably not as popular a villain as he was then with newer or younger gamers.

I don’t think there was enough requesting for Mei, and Terry is the more well known Fatal Fury character, which is why he got in over her.
Don’t forget Zero Suit Samus, Pyra/Mythra, and shirtless Shulk are a little risque’ too. Though, they covered Pyra and Mythra a tiny bit.

That would sound certainly a bit more reasonable of why Mai wasn’t getting a Spot in the Game than the ridiculous “Too Sexual” Argument XD
Yeah Zero Suit Samus would count as quite “Risque” with the Blue Latex Attire, Pyra/Mythra are originally looking somewhat “Revealing” in their Clothes(especially the Beach Ones of course).

What was anyones Reaction when that Sephiroth Trailer came out back in December of 2020?
I both like it and kinda hate. For starters it opens up a lot more for existing 3rd party franchises repped to get more characters, which is great for me since I really want Zero.
Admittedly when it was first shown I was like “….really?” and then the trailer sold me on it, but also made me realize “Oh shit, we’ll finally get proper FFVII representation” and finally have more music and some of the artwork featured then made me realize that they basically held all that shit back to be sold as DLC, which is the part I hate

I mean the DLC Stuff has been going in that Direction since like the End of the 2000s into early 2010s, but yeah I don’t like it either personally in General when all that Content is already in the Game but on purpose gets seperated to be sold as DLC. :o

Granted, some of the characters’ licenses are expensive, (imagine how much Disney charged for Sora) so perhaps the DLC does help pay to get them in, and as you said at least the DLC characters weren’t already in the game, like certain EA games…
Sakurai admitted they had licensing issues with the music for FF7, which is why we had to wait to get it in the Sephiroth DLC.

(Speaking of which, in my Halloween party RP in the RP forum, I made a poll for people to chose my Halloween costume in said RP, and surprisingly Krystal won. I guess some want to either humiliate Skunky, or imagine Skunky filling out that bikini lol.)
Maybe the devs don’t consider Krystal too risque’, because she’s an animal.

Iirc, they actually said getting Disney to let Sora in Smash wasn’t the hard part, and that Tetsuya Nomura was actually the one who was really anal about how he was portrayed(as he himself admitted)
Also just remembered, they held back the Chocobo skins for Sephiroth’s release when they were part of Cloud’s reveal back in Smash 4. I feel if they plan on bringing the 3rd parties back in the next Smash Bros, Square is gonna be the one I’m skeptical about

I guess we shouldn’t get our hopes up for Geno (Super Mario RPG) then, aside from another Mii costume.
They seem a bit limited on how many Square/Enix characters, and things that they can use.
And while I love FF7, it would be nice if they had music from other FF games, at least, like the FF6 battle theme, the Chocobo theme, and such.

Honestly it kinda sucks because Final Fantasy has a spot in Smash just for being an iconic franchise, but I also really wish they’d go outside of VII, since the franchise is much more than that. And if Nomura really is that anal about his characters, go with someone who wasn’t designed by him, like Cecil, Terra or Vivi.
Also give me some FF8 music, that game is one of my all time favorite OSTs. Even just Man With The Machine Gun would be enough for me.

Yeah, honestly even some Mii costumes of the old FF class characters would be cool. (Especially the dark mage.)
FF7 is great, but it’s a small part of the series. I understand it has legal issues, but just one thing outside FF7 would be appreciated.

Another irony is, people also complained about Ganondorf never using his sword.
Smash even teased fans with his infamous taunt of holding one briefly, and his Melee render/trophy holding one.
Now finally Ultimate included it in his Smash attacks.
Also, in regards to there being “too many sword users,” they never complain about all the characters that use guns, magic, or fire elemental attacks. (Even Mario has fireballs.) Yet, hardly any characters use ice besides Ice Cliners, Mr.G&W, and Lucus.

I never had a problem with sword users. Hell there are many I wanted(Zero, Lloyd Irving, Isaac, to name a few). I Think the bigger issue with the whole “sword user problem” is that a lot of them are from the same series(Fire Emblem) all of which blend in heavily with each other
