There’s actually a terminology for this; pardon me for forgetting the exact name of it, but basically it goes like this: if you have straight white males characters in media people will complain about it not being diverse enough; on the other hand if you have women or minorities in media getting injured you’ll get into serious fucking shit. That’s the problem with xmen currently is that it’s
too multiculturally diverse, too sexuality wise diverse and too gender diverse; they’ve gotten into deep shit before for having their women and minority characters getting seriously injured in the movies before. Well if you get into shit if you don’t have minorities and women in media, but on the other hand if you get into shit if they get seriously injured then your only option to not get into shit is do the black widow thing of essentially having them as almost background characters.
It’s a different media, but look at gaming: this E3 there was actually significantly less women and minorities in the games shown than last years E3. Why? Cause if you have minorities or women characters in games you could lose your job entirely if they get seriously injured.
I’m going to be honest here; I’m about 40% of the way through going for video game design and when I get out in the world I have no intention of making women or minority characters in games. Why? Cause I do not want to get thrown out of wherever I’m working at for the women and minority characters getting too seriously injured. If it’s a straight white male that gets a bullet through their head in a game or such nobody cares; the new trope in media is that the straight white male is the one that dies; if it’s a woman or a minority that gets killed there’s a very real chance you could get fired from the company.
