Sooo Rarity is a Plague Doctor?

Yeah, the ninteenth century and early twentieth has a fuck ton of class, I got to admit. And a lot of what we use today, or the concepts at least were explored then. Electricity, molecular physics, flight, and the internal combustion engine (in a form). It’s also at that crossroads of the “old world” and the “modern world” that you can look and get a lot of the old with the new in some kind of interesting and romantic breeding.
 
Like German Uhlans alongside modern machine gun batteries. Titanic-esque vessels. And I want to say cities seemed more gritty then too. Or at least when you look at a comparison of downtown New York with what it was in 1890 it’s quite shocking.

The thing that really draws me to that time period is admittedly to do with the amount of progress that was going on. I mean, we were getting airplanes, the internal combustion engine, the wireless telegram, the lightbulb, and all kinds of crazy shit. It was also the prime time for one of my favorite historical figures, Nikola Tesla, and his friend Mark Twain. On a side note I really like the aesthetic of the era. The way people dressed, the way things looked, the architecture. It’s all just really rich, and I’m really attracted to it on multiple levels.

Lately though I’ve been doing a lot of research into modern-history. Like WW1 on up. At the earliest 19th century. I blame it on the RP I’m running elsewhere, at the point it’s at note, I got the expectations for posters and knowledge so high you kind of got to shed away ignorance on the parties at play.
 
And being China… I’ve been looking into that a lot. Like the Chinese-Japanese relationship and the stuff that went down in the Second Sino-Chinese war and WW2 (even if the later didn’t occur in this RP, and when it does it’ll be several decades late).

Good for you! I’m more of an 1890’s to 1920’s fellow m’self. The world needs more people who know their stuff.

I was more-or-less raised on it by my own choice. I was big into the middle-ages and such for a good ten years.

Rarity will always be the spy to me. It’s cool somebody else than me cares about history!

Also on the topic of these masks again: I think there was something about them being able to ward off the evil “plague spirits” by scaring them off. At least, so I have read.

…My first thought was TF2, and I wanted to burst in here yelling about how Rarity is a Spy, not a medic.

I know, I’ve done research into it well before this. The thought was I believe scent based and doctors then would stuff the “Beak” with incense or flowers. If not protection, it was comfort against the smell of dead or dieing persons.
 
As a carnival mask, it’s sort of an over-decorated reminder of the presence of death and the plague in a whole. A lot of the stuff - such as the eye glasses part - are removed and simply “drawn” on.

If you were looking for the actual terminology, that is a plague doctor’s mask, or simply a plague mask. It was believed that a doctor wearing said mask would be protected from plague.
